Product Description

From the Back Cover

“This is a great book about MDM and its impact on our businesses, governments, and in many ways most of our lives. Written in a simple and effective style, it tells the story of how Master Data Management works, what it does, and why we should care very much how it is governed. If you have any interest in MDM, Data, or Information Governance, read this book.” –Steven B. Adler, CIPP, IBM Information Governance Solutions

“The authors have appreciated that MDM is a complex multidimensional area, and have set out to cover each of these dimensions in sufficient detail to provide adequate practical guidance to anyone implementing MDM. While this necessarily makes the book rather long, it means that the authors achieve a comprehensive treatment of MDM that is lacking in previous works. This makes the book especially valuable as a reference work.” –Malcolm Chisholm, Ph.D., President, AskGet.com Consulting, Inc.

“In this book, Alex Berson and Larry Dubov convey the many facets of the value of adopting master data management techniques while ably articulating an implementation roadmap. By maintaining the need to incorporate business process modeling, master data modeling, master metadata management, and data governance, the authors properly frame the necessary ideas for organizational preparation while still providing deep technical detail about both architecture and algorithms. This book is a definite addition to the MDM body of knowledge.” –David Loshin, President, Knowledge Integrity Incorporated

“Alex and Larry have done it again: published a very comprehensive, highly applicable book on MDM and Data Governance that achieves an excellent balance between thought-provoking academic treatment of some very technical subjects, and highly relevant, usable advice on how to achieve success in implementing a successful MDM and Data Governance program. This is a must-read for any program sponsor, CIO, CTO, enterprise architect, information architect, data steward, program manager or practitioner of MDM and Data Governance. This is not a read-and-forget book, but a great reference manual.–Martin Moseley, Chief Architect, CTO, Information Agenda Tiger Team, IBM Software Group

“This work is one of the most comprehensive, clear, well-researched, and insightful guidebooks on master data management and data governance. Larry and Alex did an exceptional job covering these complex topics from many viewpoints including technical, business, architectural, security, industry, social, international, product, and regulatory perspectives. I was so impressed at the level of detail and how much is in this book. The book covers critical principles, concepts, emerging trends, and misconceptions, based upon the author’s extensive experience and research and clarifies keys in creating successful MDM and data governance programs.” –Len Silverston, Best-selling author of The Data Model Resource Book, Volumes 1, 2, and 3

“Clearly, Alex Berson and Larry Dubov were hard at work tackling the tough topic of master data governance before the software vendor community had yet found religion (as the market now has ‘active’, ‘passive,’ and my favorite ‘passive-aggressive’ data governance flavors among the many marketing variations).” –Aaron Zornes, Chief Research Officer, The MDM Institute, San Francisco

5.0 out of 5 stars A valuable reference source for MDM projects 8 Mar 2011
Format:Hardcover
As part of a recent data quality assignment, I had cause to use the recently released 2nd edition of "Master Data Management and Data Governance" by Alex Berson and Larry Dubov.

Although I did not acquire the book specifically for this assignment, it ended up providing much valuable theory and background information. The book is very comprehensive (clocking in at just over 500 pages) but is written in an engaging and informative style by Alex and Larry, both well recognised authors and thinkers in this field.

The structure of the book is rational and logical, starting with an overview of Master Data Management, architectural considerations for MDM solutions, security/privacy/compliance and then moves on sections on implementing and governing Master Data Management. The final section reviews current MDM markets and trends. This edition has been updated to reflect the changes in both the techniques used and the technologies that are available.

The general approach to the subject is expansive, but very readable and contains many references to other publications, authors and web resources with clear analysis of these different views.

Where methodologies are stated, the authors in many cases provide alternative approaches and do not present a `one size fits all' solution. This means that you will have to spend a little time deciding on the most appropriate approach for your particular situation - but that is probably time well spent and does not make you feel that you have to follow a single prescriptive approach.

2.0 out of 5 stars Very academic, not very practical 8 April 2013
By Henrik
Format:Hardcover
This is one of those very academic titles that spends an enormous amount of time defining and describing every little detail in great theoretical depth.
I read the entire book to search for knowledge on Master Data Management that I did not already know. Sadly, the gold nuggets was few and far between.
I am already in-sync with most of the theory behind MDM, and was looking to extend my knowledge to prepare myself better for real world work cases. However, I guess I have to look elsewhere.

In my opinion, this title is characterized by being written by a professor to be read by other professors.

So who is it for?

This book is for those people who want a very definitional and academic approach to master data management.

And this book is for those who likes extremely thorough description of all those technologies related to MDM.

However, this book is not for those people, who has a mostly practical approach to knowledge and likes practical examples.

And this book it not for those people who likes their information short and to the point.

I am one of those latter people...

3.0 out of 5 stars A long sail across Lake Déjà Vu 27 Dec 2012
By Dimitri Shvorob - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
People who can benefit from reading the book include (a) vendors and consultants selling "data solutions", (b) high-level managers buying them, (c) techies typing in PowerPoint, following a tryst between (a) and (b), or lobbying for a project/budget, and (d) students in courses on "information management" etc. Someone with at least a couple of years of experience in data management - I have considered the alternatives "someone who actually knows SQL syntax" and "someone who actually has to implement or manage a data system" - asking "What new and useful technical data-management advice does the book offer?" may be disappointed. I did not find a whole lot of *original* thought, and proposals (between "where we want to be" and "how to get there", I count as proposals only the latter variety) that did seem original were not always well explained, let alone argued for. Kudos to the authors for aggregating and presenting so much material - from SOX to SSL, from XACML to GLBA, from SOUNDEX to Acxiom, from logs to logarithms - but may I express my admiration for this pedagogical feat, this triumph of methodicalness and erudition, and keep my $36 for a more practical book investment.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is THE BOOK for MDM. 17 Dec 2010
By T. Anderson - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book is great for beginners just starting out with MDM as well as seasoned professionals. I was introduced to MDM with the first version of this book. That was not my copy, so I bought the second edition for myself.

This book covers everything MDM from architectural considerations to governance and market trends.

The book offers some really sound advice on building the business case for MDM and how to communicate that business case effectively. Listen to their advice!!!! I am an architect, purely a technical guy, but I can tell you from experience without the backing of the business your project will be squashed.

The book covers the technical aspects of implementation in great detail. This book will give you the insight you need to fully understand the complexities of an MDM project. There are a ton of vendors out their claiming to have a magic install of MDM available for purchase, but the truth is they just do not exist. MDM is a process with many steps involved, not a product.

All in all if you are involved or getting involved with MDM this is the book to read.
5.0 out of 5 stars The reference book for MDM 26 Nov 2010
By Robert Hillard - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
I read the first edition in 2007, "Master Data Management and Customer Data Integration for a Global Enterprise". It was the first comprehensive look at the field and has been an enormous success in the market. I personally continue to buy it for my clients to read as a way of explaining the complexity of MDM. For that reason, I was delighted to receive a pre-release copy of the their fully updated second edition, recognising the ongoing and rapid development of this field. The new book is called simply "Master Data Management and Data Governance", taking away the references to CDI which seems to have become comfortably subsumed in the profession by MDM.

The book is a complete refresh, without losing the core content in the original that made it such a good primer on the topic. There is a new chapter providing different industry perspectives, with specific language and suggestions that will be extremely useful for practitioners in financial services, telecommunications, healthcare, hospitality, manufacturing, life sciences, logistics, retail, social services, security and government intelligence. Regulatory requirements have also evolved and the book reflects many of these changes (although the book retains a US-focus in this respect).

Particularly pleasing to me is additional content (and focus given the revised title) on data management and governance, with MDM being treated as providing the tools to navigate this business critical asset. The book provides a solid set of governance principles (including reference back to MIKE2.0) that make an excellent starting point for most organizations. Berson and Dubov have also now included support for data modellers including comparisons of approaches and the impact these options have on the overall architecture.

Finally, like the rest of the book, the chapter on vendors and their products has been completely revised reflecting the many changes in the software landscape since the first edition of the book. Anyone wanting a good summary of available technologies is going to be pleased by the detail provided in chapter 18.
