She's back and more glamorous than ever. It has been a long, long wait and The Rhythm Romance was certainly a tough act to follow. It has to be said though that The Rhythm Romance is to this day her masterpiece and everything sher does will be measured up against that standard. And to be honest: Dolled up is very good but not up to that standard. The impressive thing about Mari Wilson as an artist is that she constantly evolves and re-invents herself which puts her in a different class from most artists who just do their thing. So this time it's not New Wave, not Jazz but straightforward pop songs, sometimes with intersting elements such as disco, Motown or country. The lyrics are generally well written, often funny and witty occassionally not so subtle (I'm getting there for example). Adrian York on piano is great, I love the arrangements, particularly the way drum sections are used. In terms of topic, the album has been called "a concept album for divorcees", so in terms of style the songs range from vulnerable, to sad (You can't play in my backyard is the most heartbreakingly sad song I have ever listened to without even mentioning the wiord "love" once) up to cautiously optimistic (great juxtaposition of words and music in "The love Thing") but nothing really upbeat. The only drawback with that for me is that I would have liked more variety in terms of tempo on this CD. Some faster paced and more upbeat songs would have certainly made the CD more intersting to listen to. But Mari Wilson has a great voice and certainly knows how to use it. I think she could recite the phone book and I'd buy the CD. If you look at the cover it's good to see that she is also back as the glamorous glamourpuss (quite a change from the woman who once had a picture of herself on the sleeve of a record holding the book "Fat is a Feminist issue".)
