This is a genuine movie classic, with Lana Turner starring as the mother who suffers for her sins! The story is typical trash-melodrama, as Turner loves and then foresakes her husband & son, believing that she has & will only cause them grief.

Turner is terrific as Hollie/ Madam X, and truly delivers a stella performance (especially in the final courtroom scenes) while Keir Dullea is movingly touching as the son who doesn't know his mother but is willing to shed tears over the honour of the mysterious Madam X. John Forsythe plays an early Blake Carrington (or is Blake Carrington playing John Forsythe I wonder?) while Ricardo Montalban is equally charming/ creepy as the playboy who seduces Hollie (Turner) and starts her downward spirial.

Its interesting to note that nearly all the major players lived on to better themselves two decades later, in 80's primetime soaps - Forsythe in Dynasty; Turner & Dullea in Falcon Crest, and Montalban in The Colby's - which must surely show how these actors loved playing 'misery'!

Top notch film, up there with Mildred Pierce and Stella Dallas - do not miss!

I bought this film because it's a classic. The only minor moan I have with this version is that the film appears ever so slightly out of focus (the picture quality reminds me of old VHS recordings!) - hence the 4 star rating. One other thing, although the film is English, whenever newspaper clippings are shown as part of the film (you'll know what I mean if you've ever seen the film), they are translated on screen in Italian subtitles - something I wasn't expecting. None of this however, stopped me from enjoying the movie though. The end always makes me weep!

This was not the madame x ordered. everything on cover indicated the contents would be the same even though the cover was different but on being played the film is in italian. The item was purchased as a gift. Now due to the time passed and the fact that the item cannot be returned unopened I cannot return it for a full refund. Is this a confidence trick or a mistake by the supplier?

This is not what is displayed in the picture. I was led to believe I was ordering an ENGLISH original version, not a FRENCH version. The writing outside the dvd is also French. The label also looks very washed out (poorly printed). Would not recommend at all. It was ordered for a Christmas present and is now too late to return. Absolute rip off.

Lana Turner stars as Holly Parker, a shop clerk who marries a wealthy man (John Forsythe) with political goals. She loves him, but his long absences drive her into the arms of a slimy playboy (Ricardo Montalban) and her mother-in-law knows all about it.

This was the third Ross Hunter-Lana Turner movie and like the others, it features a glamorous woman in a designer wardrobe who lives in a palatial estate, has her heart broken, it's all delivered with much sudsy melodrama. This film has even more to offer: The star allows herself to appear old and pathetically, even grotesquely ugly and gives a genuinely heart-tugging performance. Don't watch the trailer first, as it spoils the whole story and it's a really good script with lots of dramatic twists and turns and an ending that left me sobbing.

Lana Turner is good in the role of outsider-turned-socialite and Forsythe and Montalban are, too. Keir Dullea is well-cast as an attorney and Burgess Meredith excels as a loathsome criminal. The story is poignant and should ring true to all parents and children. Recommended.

Was going to buy this but if it is in Italian then there is no point ALSO £20 is a bit steep for one film....should be around the £10 or under mark.... don't you think?
