Book Description

15 Nov 2012

A groundbreaking and always controversial musician, M.I.A. is an influential artist and an important cultural figure of the last decade. Here is a documentation of her entire visual output and a telling of her story in collages, photos, and prints from her early years in art school at Central Saint Martins London through to her hugely successful three albums, mixtapes, and live performances at PS1 MoMA, Coachella, various exhibitions, installations, and music video shoots. The artwork is comprised of a wide variety of materials and media: video stills turned to stencils pieced back together to make animated installations; spray-painted canvasses scanned then made into digital collages; photographs videotaped, then run through bad computer connections to create graphic prints; artwork on nails, walls, prints for T-shirts, handmade stage costumes—anything she could find while she was touring. Also included are assorted lyrics and portions of an exclusive interview in which she discusses candidly the personal events and themes which informed her art and music at the time of each campaign. Includes foreword by Steve Loveridge, friend since her art school days and frequent creative collaborator with M.I.A.

Product Description

"The book contains original drawings, collages, photographs, and digital artwork, with intermittent textual commentary, detailing the political and artistic evolution that led her to pursue music as a more publicly accessible, aggressive medium." "Complex Magazine""As chaotic and trippy as Magic Eye, this book is as overwhelming as it is powerful--much like the artist herself." " Lifestyle Mirror"."..collages, prints and concept artwork by the renegade artist and turns them into a cacophony of colour. The riotous art appears on her manicure, clothing, walls and takes readers through the themes that underlie M.I A.'s work and self-presentation" "National Post"

About the Author

Mathangi "Maya" Arulpragasam, M.I.A. (her stage name, "Missing in Act(i)on") is an English musician, producer, painter, and director. Her music combines elements of hip-hop, electronica, dance, alternative, and influences from around the world. She is the first artist to be nominated for all of the following awards: an Academy Award (for her work on the soundtrack for "Slumdog Millionaire"), two Grammys, a Brit Award, and Mercury Prize; and the first artist of Asian descent to be nominated for an Academy Award and Grammy in the same year. The first nine years of her life were marked by displacement due to the Sri Lankan civil war--a theme that influences her work, which is often political.

I'm such a huge fan of M.I.A so obviously I was going to love this book but even for those who aren't, it's such an interesting look into her art and mind, she is truly exceptional.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing art 17 Nov 2012
By Nicholas Daniels - Published on Amazon.com

I absolutely love her rework and her story. It's very admirable where she came from and her dedication to the civil war in Sri Lanka. Her art is unlike anything I've sen before and as an artist myself it's very inspiring.

5.0 out of 5 stars What you see it is what to expect 15 April 2014
By Victor Hugo - Published on Amazon.com

A compilation of Maya's work in great graphics, great material and amazing bio and subtitling to the imagens. I recommend it not only for the fans, but for anyone who seeks inspiration in visual art. The way she spread her political point of view is inspiring.

4.0 out of 5 stars Stunning, Bright, Informative 13 May 2013
By Nicholas Goodroad - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
What a beautiful book - It is big, bright, and informative. The story of Maya's education is one not unfamiliar to undergraduates around the world. Hers is more complicated because of the power struggle in her home country.

The story of M.I.A.'s musical and graphic development stands on its own, but the vivid colors (including a metallic green spot color on the color) makes it a great coffee table book. Furthermore, the low-fi nature of her patterns and posters inspires experimentation with design tools, even among amateurs.
