Book Description

4 May 2008 1905583125 978-1905583126
A coroner reveals a body's tell-tale clues to his students, as he unwittingly dissects his own relationship . . . A breakdown driver turns his roadside routine into a quite different type of pick-up . . . Two creative writing tutors discuss the merits of hardboiled versus cosy schools of crime writing, while a murderous student points out that it's really procedure that counts . . . The second in this series of anthologies from the CWA picks up the primary scent of any investigation: the modus operandi; the signature that identifies any repeat offender, the how that supersedes the why . From the ex-doctor tenderly administering a final prescription to his victims, the party of finishing school debutantes exacting revenge on their lecherous host... these stories demonstrate that, even with the most despicable of crimes, there s methodology in the madness.

'Packs more heat than than a hoodlum's armpit holster.' --Mslexia

'Pick of the book is Karline Smith's 'Dirty, Evil Greed', which is set in 1970s Jamaica and captures both atmosphere and a pervading feel of evil. She's undoubtedly a writer to watch and wow, she's not a white middle-aged man either!' --Reviewing the Evidence

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent crime stories 24 May 2008
By Damaskcat HALL OF FAME TOP 50 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
19 stories all from masters of this genre. There are settings ancient and modern and locations spanning the globe. There are stories with twist endings and straightforward stories where the how and why are more important than the who as the title of the anthology suggests. 'Vivisection' is gruesome and 'The Nether World' spine chilling whilst 'The Blogging Game' is bang up to date and 'Going Back' gives a new twist to the idea that it is never a good idea to return to the scene of a crime. These stories are all gems of their kind and if you want something to dip in and out of I recommend this book

4.0 out of 5 stars Comma's M.O. wins again 20 Jan 2012
Format:Paperback
Yet another exhilarating collection from Manchester's excellent Comma Press. They've gone from strength to strength as an indie publisher, but this is one of their stand-out achievements. From the opening encounter on a mortuary slab I was hooked, and the pace is maintained throughout a brilliant collection of short crime stories. The twists are brutal, the writing is snappy and there's enough variety to thrill readers of any genre. Every single story zings, and that's no mean feat in such a wide-ranging collection. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect Beach Book 29 Jun 2008
By E Evans
Format:Paperback
Whatever your taste in crime, there's something in here for you. These short stories range over all the genres: gruesome, historical, cosy, psychological. I particularly liked Going Back and Anne & Clare. It's a great book to take on holiday and dip into. And a great way to find a new crime author to try when you get home.
