Product Description

For the first time in 15 years, comes a comprehensive, definitive collection of the lyrics of music legend and poet, Bob Dylan. From his early days of protest songs, like "Blowing in the Wind", "The Times They Are A Changing", to his revolutionary Subterranean "Homesick Blues", and "Like a Rolling Stone", "Lay Lady Lay", his songs have spoken to generations, had a huge influence on such artists as John Lennon, Lou Reed and Mark Knopfler. This book also contains all of his most recent writing in addition to the beloved songs of the early Dylan canon.

LYRICS 1962-1985

Bob Dylan's lyrics have been championed by poets Allen Ginsberg and Michael McClure, compared favourably to Shakespeare by Professor Christopher Ricks, dismissed by the guardians of 'folk music', chanted at the barricades of civil rights struggles and youth revolts – and rejected in their turn by the generation that followed.

What remains – and continues – is a solid body of work that reflects as well as any cultural document the preoccupations of its generation over a twenty-year period, but offers also an intense and eccentric lyric poetry of sharp images, tuned aphorisms and the rhythmic flexibility of the best American verse.

"Its right to pride of place on the rock culture's short shelf of indispensable writings will be unchallenged. Dylan is the most talented single songwriter of modern times"
CLIVE JAMES, 'The Guardian'

"Variously extraordinary and insinuatingly true songs"
CHRISTOPHER RICKS

"As a lyric poet of intensity, and as a human being of political and humanistic feeling, Dylan stands proud with the revolutionary romantics of the early nineteenth century"
RICHARD GOTI, 'The Guardian'

"The happiest aspect of this book is that it is not the end. There is still more to come from the ever-churning cement-mixer that is Dylan's creative mind"
DAILY TELEGRAPH

As a preamble I'd like to say that I first bought this book in Hardback 'Coffee Table Style' unwieldy and with a tendency to soon look older than it was because its silver cover was very easily marked by the softest things and, after a few days looked as though midgets had been iceskating on it.

I notice that a previous reviewer lamented the absence of 'World Gone Wrong'. Well you won't find 'Good As I Been To You' here either simply because all of the songs on those two albums were not written by Dylan. No point in blaming the publisher.

Anyway Bob has been pretty prolific of late so this [nice handy format paperback] edition is useful for poring over and guessing just what roots a line sprang from or to simply sit amazed at the sheer volume of material this man has composed over the years. His first eight albums are enough to earn him a place in the songsters pantheon, sat right at the top. For songster is what he is. Few of his songs could stand without the music, sprung from genius as they are. They NEED the music to wind the words around into a holy chrysalis from which his genius will emerge in all its radiant beauty. So NO, I don't think he is a contender for the nobel prize for Literature but I do think there should be a Nobel prize for songwriters.

While now a little dated (only going up to 1985), this book is a vital document for anyone with an interest in the way a true master shapes his lyrics. As readable as a book of the finest poetry, the edition is furnished with not only an album-by-album presentation of Dylan's lyrics, but also with a range of other lyrics (out-takes etc), poems, liner notes, and a handful of line drawings by the man himself. Sensibly put together with a useful index (by title and by prominent lines), along with Dylan's 'Tarantula', this is what every Dylan fan should have by his side when the stereo gets switched off.

The book size is tiny but is well printed.
The translation in German is irrelevant to me but I guess is for the German market?

The look inside refers to a different book
The book with the red cover is a short book with editorial in German and is not a different edition of the Definitive Lyrics 1962-2001. Is it possible to give a zero star rating?
