Book Description

1 Mar 2011
Peacefully floating on the surface of the sea, Lyra is very good at ignoring everything. But when her beloved W. Rabbit is taken away by an unschooled whooshing jumble of flying fish, Lyra finds herself caught up in an amazing watery adventure below the surface of the ocean. With the help of her new friend Timothy the turtle, she bravely vows to find W. Rabbit at all costs.
Unusually, the plot is framed by the real-life story of a premature baby who, in this book, grows into a little girl during her incubator dreams. A highly original and beautifully illustrated fantasy adventure for younger readers.
All royalties from this book are being donated to Luton and Dunstable Hospital's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

Review

"This is a lovely and engaging tale which will appeal to young readers but what makes it special and original is that the authors were inspired to write it when they saw their niece for the first time, lying in her incubator next to her toy rabbit, struggling to be alive. Knowing this helps the story make sense as her struggle to stay alive is reflected in her quest to get W. Rabbit back. The beautiful illustrations make it a very precious book and I feel that it would be a very comforting read for parents all over the world who are at this precise moment sitting by an incubator waiting... it might just give a small ray of hope." --The School Librarian

"Accompanied by delightfully gentle illustrations this is a charming story. With lots of humour - I loved the idea of Timothy and his elaborate home - and just the right amount of trepidation. It highlights how a special toy can be an important friend to a child by providing much needed reassurance and security. Lovely to read together." --Carousel Magazine

About the Author

When Peter and Alice first met their niece Lyra and saw her struggling to stay alive, they were inspired to create a story for her about the sort of adventure she might be dreaming up for herself as she lay in her incubator. Lyra was born at just 24 weeks and five days. She weighed only 1lb and 10oz and she was about the size of an adult's hand. Lyra's lungs were not properly developed and she couldn t breathe on her own, so the doctors at Luton and Dunstable Hospital have her something to help her breathe. It was called a CPAP and it fitted over her mouth and nose. It looked a bit like a snorkel so that s what Peter and Alice called it. Peter is a film, television and music producer based in London. Alice trained as a fashion designer before working as a set and costume designer on various film and television productions. She now works as a freelance art director.

4.0 out of 5 stars A story with longevity 6 Jun 2011
By J. Carr
Format:Hardcover
I bought this book to be read in the future by my niece, who was born prematurely. She won't be ready to read it for some years, but it'll be on the shelf waiting for her. However, my almost 4 year old daughter and I did have a sneak read of it before we posted it (for quality control purposes you understand!). It's a beautiful, imaginative story and nicely illustrated. I'm not sure what age it's aimed at though. My daughter found it rather long and we had to read it in two chapters. She's not really used to that though so struggled with having to start in the middle of the story for the second episode. However, it probably suits the sort of age when a child can begin to understand their own story of their birth and first few weeks and months and thus ties in nicely.

This story could be read on a number of levels and I can imagine it will remain on many bookshelves long into adulthood, particularly if the reader started life with a 'snorkel' themselves.

5.0 out of 5 stars Oh, wow! 5 April 2011
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Lyra and W Rabbit have just joined my list of favourite characters of all time. They are up there with Just William and the Moomins, as far as I'm concerned, and I can't say more than that.

This book is utterly delightful. It was inspired, we are told, by a premature baby girl called Lyra whose companion from birth is a cuddly white rabbit called, appropriately enough, W Rabbit. Disaster strikes when W Rabbit is carried off by a schol of flying fish. But with the help of various aquatic companions, including an aristocratic turtle called Timothy, Lyra manages to track him down. W Rabbit is top of the class at the flying school, but he happily gives up his career to rejoin his beloved Lyra.

At the end, we see the real Lyra, now big enough no longer to need the special breathing apparatus that looked like a snorkel and inspired the story.

The language is delightful; the illustrations are out of this world. Together they make magical music.

Young, old or somewhere in-between, you'll love this book.
