As a collection of reproductions of Lyonel Feininger's paintings, this book is excellent.

The reproductions are full page, and each has a brief essay putting the painting into context within Feininger's life. These essays include reproductions of sketches and Feininger's satirical cartoons and it's very intriguing to see how his use of elements of cubist techniques transform the images - particularly since the transformations are sometimes in fact very slight though the (subjective) effect is sometimes very considerable.

The book is prefaced by a fairly illuminating biography of Feininger - the author is an academic Art Historian who did his PhD on Feininger - with lots of factual information about the historical context.

What I missed (as a none-artist) was any useful account or discussion of the techniques Feininger used to create some of the marvellous textures of his oil paintings after 1914 - where he appears to have etched away at layers of paint, for instance - or of the beautiful geometrical distortions of pictures like 'Bird Cloud'.

This one quibble aside, this is a beautiful book.Lyonel Feininger (Art & Design)

a wonderful book 6 Nov 2010
Format:Hardcover
A great book with wonderful colour plates spanning 20th century Feiningers career.
It's in english too which is very useful as most of the books seem to be in German.
If you are a an english speaking fan of Feininger and want a good reference book this is it.

I think one of the reviews has the wrong book - my version has colour plates of the bird cloud, jesuits, the bicycle race, etc included.

Disappointing offering from June L. Ness. Could have done with some decent quality colour prints of Feiningers work and no, cheapskate black and white pictures, just to pad it out; considering this book is supposed to be about a great artist who painted would you believe in colour.
It seriously needs a remake, preferably edited by someone else, someone who knows what they're doing.
His best work isn't even here, (which was no surprise) Jesuits iii, the Bicycle Race, Bird Cloud, Gelmeroda and the Bathers and there is little reference of the influence or technique of his fantastic and highly individual style. It would have been great if there had been an in depth analysis of some of his paintings, you know the ones he did in colour. I suppose that was too much to ask.
