On this album Lyle is more country than his later big-band albums. The lyrics are humourous and insightful, and this album contains his most beautiful song ever - God will. That song makes my hair spiky.

I'm slowly exploring 'country' after many years of dismissing it all as sentimental sequined cobblers-this album, released in 1986 is an excellent example of what I've been missing all these years. Only ten tracks-I presume this first came out on vinyl, there is hardly a foot wrong. Its original and captivates from the outset with very strong song writing that borrows from blues and rock as well as country, actually its a stretch classifying it as the latter.I only have one other Lovett album, the Texas songwriters covers cd Step inside this house, and while that is also very worthwhile it didn't prepare me for this one. I'll certainly explore more from the guy-(ignore his visual resemblance to Leo Sayer on the cover-the 80s have a lot to answer for).

I FIRST BOUGHT THIS ALBUM ON VINYL, WHEN IT FIRST CAME OUT AS PART OF THE NEW COUNTRY MOVEMENT, BUT I DIDN'T GET A COUNTRY RECORD WHAT I GOT WAS AN AMALGAM OF JAZZ , BLUES AND COUNTRY. THIS IS THE ROAD LYLE LOVETT HAS FOLLOWED EVER SINCE, IT CONTAINS SOME GREAT SONGS SUCH AS 'COWBOY MAN', 'GOD WILL' AND THE VERY JAZZY 'AN ACCEPTABLE LEVEL OF ECSTASY'. THIS GLORIOUS MIXTURE STILL SOUNDS FRESH TODAY, IT IS A GREAT WRITER FINALLY GIVEN HIS CHANCE. LYLE LOVETT WOULD FOLLOW THIS PATH ON ALBUMS SUCH AS 'PONTIAC' AND THE VERY WONDERFUL 'JOSHUA JUDGES RUTH' AND ALTHOUGH RECENT ALBUMS HAVE NOT BEEN UP TO THE STANDARD OF THESE EARLY ALBUMS HE STILL REMAINS A WONDERFULLY IDIOSYNCRATIC SONGWRITER.
