4.0 out of 5 stars bargain naxos overview of 20th C master 23 Aug 2013
Format:Audio CD
this brand new naxos box set of Antoni Wit's 1990's recording with his Polish countryfolks is a valuable newcomer to the cd market. Witold Lutoslwaski passed away in 1994 + left an impressive legacy of key works in the 20th C classical canon that are still to establish themselves in quite the same way as Shostakovich , Prokofiev, or Penderecki. my introduction to this composer was via a marvellous concert at st.giles as part of London barbican weekend in 1996 that started my admiration for this still under appreciated 20th C giant. Lutoslawski for me is the perhaps the ideal bridge between the austere serialists such as Schoenberg, Webern via Ligeti + Bartok via Debussy if you will.

this 10 cd naxos box set like all box sets cannot possibly offer the best, definitive versions but based on the many cd s i own of this series + composer, Wit offers consistently valuable versions that whilst not offering the best key recordings (the composer himself on emi, Salonen on sony, barenboim etc) he DOES offer well recorded, perceptive cds here on many pivotal , exciting + sophisticated works such as the concerto for orchestra, jeux venitiens, chantefleurs et chantefables, mi-parti etc . Wit does sometimes offer over cautious readings but orchestral detail + dynamics are usually well judged.

much great music is to be enjoyed here of one of the most important late 20th C composers - where tonality met atonity, where consonace met dissonance, where years of craftmanship met supreme, innovative compositions. yes - i'm a fan of Lutoslawski certainly. for bargain hunters - i'm not sure if 10 cd box set is neccesary other for the completists, but at less than £3 per cd certainly great value.
