Idris Elba returns as John Luther, the near-genius detective struggling with his own demons.
Devastated by the brutal murder of his wife, John Luther returns to policing in a different world. After Zoe’s death and best friend Ian Reed’s betrayal, Luther spent some time working on cold cases.
Now he’s back. His old unit has gone and he’s working in the newly created Serious and Serial unit. Headed by former police complaints officer Martin Schenk (Dermot Crowley), it is Luther’s chance for a fresh start. But is it one he really wants?
Luther quickly gathers together his team, rescuing his old partner Detective Justin Ripley (Warren Brown) from career oblivion. Joining them is ambitious Detective Erin Gray (Nikki Amuka-Bird). She’s heard of Luther’s reputation, seen what’s happened to Ripley and doesn’t want her own job prospects tarnished in the same way.
It’s not long before they’re dealing with their first case. A masked man wanders the streets of London, carrying out ritualistic murders in historic locations – Smithfield, Petticoat Lane… He’s taking Luther on a tour through the narrow alleyways and back streets of the city, using murders to mark out his territory and working up to one final masterpiece…

Simply great, fast paced adult thriller with great acting and some good twists and turns. I hope the Beeb do another series!

Alice is only in episode 1 as is the Mcganne character, they are sorely missed. The new female side-kick isn't a strong enough character to balance Idris Elba's Luther. Also her accent keeps slipping between London and Wales. After the outstanding first series and the excellent last episode this one is a bit of a let down. Having said that, it's still a lot better than many crime series and I will still get the next series (if they make one)

If you have never watched Luther before I suggest you start with the equally impressive series 1.
I loved Elba as Stringer Bell in the Wire and he is great in this too.
This series is done slightly different in that there are only 4 episodes (2 stories done in double episodes)
My only 2 complaints are:
1. Not enough episodes - why not 6 episodes like series 1?
2. Alice appears only briefly at the beginning of the series. Then vanishes into thin air. I hope she will be back for series 3 if it is ever produced.
Still not enough to warrant less than 5 stars.

I absolutely love this series! However, I did not know that UK/British movies are not compatible with U.S. DVD players..... This would have been nice to know up front. Read more

simply not so good
the first series had something, mostly it was the Alice relationship, but also the dynamic with the wife and her lover, but series 2 lacks context and credibility. Read more

Another great series from BBC. Great acting, taut story-lines criss-crossing across a landscape of violence, brutality, and (at least in one case) retribution. Read more
