Format: Audio CD
Lustra's release was badly timed. It came out at the start of the backlash against so-called Britpop. Bands like Pulp and Echobelly (who never saw themselves as Britpop in the first place) got caught in the firing line.
This is unfortunate, because Lustra is a great rock album, and is ripe for re-discovery. Opener "Bulldog Baby" begins in a dark swirl before opening into an epic chorus. "I'm Not a Saint" is really catchy, "Lustra" is rock with a spiritual touch and "Bleed" is a fragile acoustic moment with a country edge. "Wired On" begins as a straightforward rock song before taking a detour into a swell of beautiful strings. The loveliest track is the jaunty "Iris Art", full of melodic riffs and a swirling chorus that helps showcase Sonia Aurora Madan's distinctive voice.
Highly recommended - a lost treat.
