I was living in China when this film came out. It was banned of course. So I had to wait some time to see the movie, but I managed to get hold of the soundtrack. It is beautiful, up there with the very best in contemporary scores (Atonement, Gladiator, Inception, etc). When I eventually saw the movie I knew the soundtrack very well. It is a perfect fit capturing the melancholy and tragedy of the film's central plot. Yet it works wonderfully as a stand alone peice of music - in bed at night or with coffee and the papers on a Sunday morning. Absolutely recommended.

A great film and great music throughout.

The perfect chill-out album. Very soothing and beautiful melodic tunes.

Another Exquisite Desplat Score 28 Oct. 2007
By Gabriel Oak - Published on
Format: Audio CD
Alexandre Desplat keeps getting better. I loved his work for The Painted Veil, The Queen, Girl with a Pearl Earring and The Beat My Heart Skipped. I think Lust, Caution may be his best work yet. He captures the sadness and melancholy of the film beautifully. A must for any film score collector.

more great music to another amazing ang lee tragedy. 8 Oct. 2007

hearing the strings rise in over the piano on that 'angel' tune is breathtaking...beautiful score to an unforgettable film...see it in the theater while you still can, this music is a big stand out.

A Elegiac Score with Heart and Soul 17 Nov. 2007
By LJ - Published on
Format: Audio CD
If you have seen the movie, the score has even more relevance and beauty. The music takes you into elegiac bliss--as oxymoronic as the title of the film! I have used the music to assist myself in writing and in feeling the way that the heart resurects in pain. I thoroughly recommend this soundtrack.

If a picture is worth a thousand words this is worth many more. 26 Feb. 2008
By Marcia J. Wise - Published on
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
I have not seen the movie but the score is so moving and intuitive that you find the intrigue, the romance, the passion to be your own. You may even want to check your passport to see whether or not you have really been there after experiencing this beautifully captivating masterpiece. Alexandre Desplat has become a favorite of mine.

Evocative Music 16 Nov. 2007
By Julie - Published on
Format: Audio CD
The score is beautifully and sensitively written - and the piano pieces (Track 2, 3, 21, & 22) have a strong romantic yearning in them. You could just play them over and over again. But seriously, this soundtrack complement's Ang Lee's understated and very nuanced movie. I would recommend that you watch the show and then buy the soundtrack. FIVE STARS for both!
