Product Description

Product Description

The sinking of the Lusitania, one of the most famous incidents in world history, occurred on 7 May 1915, off the Irish coast. Lusitania, an Irish Tragedy is the first book to pick up the narrative from the point of the sinking to tell the gripping and tremendous stories which surround this historic event. The book highlights for the first time the heroic rescue work undertaken by Irish fishermen and lifeboats; it tells the tales of those who tended the dead and succoured the living, those who served on the coroner's jury, and those who worked as bodyhunters scouring the coast in response to rewards. There is much more, including the vivid stories of the numerous Irish passengers and crew who were aboard the doomed vessel. Here too is a thorough guide to the rich legacy of Lusitania graves in Ireland, and comprehensive information on the memorial, discovery, salvage and protection efforts carried out in the years Since. As the Lusitania fades from living memory to unforgettable icon, this book clears away the cobwebs and the mythmaking of nine decades to reveal the thrilling and powerful truth.

5.0 out of 5 stars A well written treatment, 13 Feb 2007

This review is from: Lusitania - Irish Tragedy: An Irish Tragedy (Hardcover)
Following the success of his book, The Irish Aboard the Titanic, Senan Molony has crafted another book; Lusitania: An Irish Tragedy.
There are many photos of passengers and crew not used before and many accounts that have not found their way into books. Authors such as Diana Preston, David Ramsay, and others chose easily accessible accounts through archives used by Hickey, Smith and Hoehling. Molony decided the standard accounts have been re-hashed enough and did research to uncover never told before stories. It shows a general laziness in other authors to go with the readily accessible versus going out and doing actual research. Congratulations to Molony on showing the disaster affected Ireland and her people and putting a new spin on the Lusitania story.

Excellent book by Senan Moloney; a lot of information presented in a different way so as not to be too heavy a read. It was recommended to me by a friend as the best Lusitania book written so far.
