This is the most elegant album by Nancy. I think it's her masterpiece. It was recorded with a full string orchestra, sumptuously arranged by Billy May, Oliver Nelson and Sid Feller in the spring of 1967. The sound is so lush, timeless and classy. I've read somewhere that this is Nancy's personal favourite record because she said that this album "sums up who I am and the kind of music I like".
I've been listening to this album for many years (I have at least 3 copies of this CD in case it wears out from playing too often on my CD player) and it remains fresh and moving after all these years. Every song is a treasure on this album. It focuses on wistful, slow, evocative and lovelorn ballads. I think it's her rarified choice of materials made Nancy's recording like this absolutely unique. On a more emotional note, this album has given one a consolation in the lonely hours and the stoical mood at the time of sadness when it's concerned with the affairs of the heart. When the words can't describe how one's feeling, one tends to turn to music for solace.
Nancy is an artist in a fullest sense of the word. She has the rare ability to treat lyrics with complete understanding and capture the essential emotional feel. She sings stories. Her songs are about self-exploration and self-discovery. The words mean everything to her in a song. The melody is not as paramount as the words. That's the difference between Nancy's music and today's music. Today's music is all about beat and loudness.
Throughout her long career, she never wavered. She never sacrifices her art. Every song she sings, she makes her own. When she sings a contemporary ballad (listen to a gorgeous phrasing in "Sunny" or a yearning ballad, "Only The Young"), they are not easy to sing, yet Nancy's interpretations are such that the quality and meaning is totally captured.
Some reviews state that this album has a heavy Streisand 'feel' in terms of arrangments and song selections. I can understand there is a similarity in choosing very lyrical and obscure (less well known) songs in both artists' works but the way they interpret their songs are very different. Nancy is a song stylist completely. Listen to the most heartfelt renditions of "You've Changed", "When The World Was Young", and "The Right To Love (Reflections)" and you'll understand why this artiste is one of the great singers of our time.
