Amazon.co.uk Review

We would all like to eat food that is good for us--it's just that food that is not so healthy tastes so darn good. The answer is in The Luscious Low-fat Cook Book. Following the success of Alison Rose and Tony Guy's chain of "Luscious" low-fat cafes comes the book that offers recipes that are delicious and low in fat.

The recipes in this book are not usually found in low-fat cook books: crisps, dips, muffins, brownies, pizza, mayonnaise and more. By using low-fat ingredients and some odd combinations, like courgettes and cocoa to make brownies (tastes good!), traditionally high-fat recipes are converted into luscious low-fat ones. Tony and Alison even encourage readers to e-mail their favourite recipes to them and they will give them the luscious treatment.

The recipes are easy to follow and use readily available ingredients. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks and dessert are covered as well as party food and delicious drinks.

More than just a list of recipes, the book also offers advice on living a low-fat life from working out your daily fat requirement to explaining the difference between "good" and "bad" fat. Also included is a handy chart that outlines the average fat contents of the most frequently eaten foods--so you know what to avoid and what to include in your diet. Presented in a colourful, simple and easy to read format the lifestyle information is as easy to digest as the recipes.--Amelia Crook

On the face of it, the Luscious Low-Fat Cookbook is bright, cheery and looks to be a welcome addition to the kitchen bookshelf. However, after dwelving down into the depths of each recipe, it is clear that the truely low-fat recipes rely on hard to find ingredients (have you ever seen low-fat sour cream or low-fat fresh parmesan in your supermarket?) and that the rest of the recipes are actually quite high in fat.

I think I'll be sticking with Sue Kreitzman's books; the recipes are much lower in fat and far more innovative. Unfortunately I'm relegating the Luscious Low-Fat Cookbook to the bottom shelf of my bookcase, I shan't be cooking from this...

Disappointing. No pictures. Not family friendly recipies suitable for all. Limited number of main course dishes. Not an everyday cookbook. No full menu planning for a day or week of low fat cooking. Many of the recipies would never in reality use; or have the ingredients to hand. Offers nothing new or exciting to entice one into a world of low fat cooking.

First impressions were that this book looked fun, bright and full of good recipes, apon futher inspection I realised that this was only really for hardcore low fat fanatics (ie Egg White Omlettes). Not the kind of book your average person wanting a healthier diet would need, but great if you want to be really extreme about having no fat in your diet.
