Product Description

Product Description

Every year, equipped with specialist equipment and a team of huskies, an intrepid group of highly-skilled competitors penetrates a porcelain world. It is winter in the sub-Arctic, a season of extreme cold, storms and 17-hour nights, where the snow underfoot is so crystalline that it chafes like sandpaper. This is the Yukon Territory, the start of the annual Yukon Quest, a 1025-mile dog-sled race which ends in the heart of Alaska. Award-winning journalist John Balzar decides that he too must take part in this epic event, and this book tells the story of his adventures, dramatically depicting the wild country, the extreme cold and the solitary ordeal of the drivers and dogs who commit to the race.

About the Author

John Balzar is a correspondent for the Los Angeles Times and was awarded the Scripps Howard Foundation prize for human interest writing. He has worked as a river boatman in Alaska's mountains and sailed across the Pacific. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Just brilliant! 2 April 2011
Format:Paperback
Loved the book, felt I was actually there - dogs, snow, wilderness - marvellous.

However, do note that Lure of the Quest and Yukon Alone both by John Balzar are actually the same book. The only difference is that Yukon Alone has about a two page Afterword. I found out after I had ordered and received both books.

Captivating..... 10 Mar 2000
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
The book started of a little slowly but by 1/4 of the way I was captivated. The Author takes you on a journey as you travel with him throughout the race. He introduces you to the men and women, their dogs, their toils, and troubles and he inspires you to head North and be part of this race.

Great Book! 8 Feb 2000
Format:Paperback
Having read 3/4 of this book, i now want to go and live in Alaska and drive dogs and spend icy nights gazing at the northern lights, smoking some dooby and growing a beard of icicles, talking to my dogs of the glory of adventure.

I recomend this book to everyone who has an interest in travel and isolation and cold and dogs.

Reading this book has cemented my resolve to go and live in the artic circle, at least for a year. See y'all. . .
