Orkestra del Sol’s explosive reinvention of global brass music has captured imaginations, set pulses racing and left a trail of well-worn dance floors across continents over the past six years. Lung Capacity is the band’s third album, and it boasts excellent recording and production values courtesy of Producer Joe Acheson (Hidden Orchestra - TruThoughts Recordings). Orkestra del Sol’s music is an ingenious concoction of styles, and Lung Capacity takes eclectic influences – ska, porro, Balkan brass, klezmer and dubstep – and rolls them into a confidently original whole: a living, breathing, polka-ing, pogo-ing honkstep for the 21st century. Trumpet, trombone, saxes, clarinet, accordion, two drummers and the epic bass of the sousaphone conspire perfectly to create soaring horn lines and beautifully layered harmonies, driven by an uncompromising rhythm section who deliver the meanest grooves with a twinkle in their eye! The album takes its name from the pivotal moment in Orkestra del Sol’s live show when the band pit themselves against each to establish which member has the maximum lung capacity. The Orkestra’s inventive shows are full of wit, imagination and humour; Lung Capacity does an excellent job of capturing this live energy, whilst retaining an artful attention to detail.
