Book Description

2 Oct 1997

'Lunch’ means a multitude of things to different people. To some it is a robust Sunday roast, to others a more informal meal of Minestrone or Ham and Pasta Casserole. But most people recognise lunch, particularly at the weekend, as a time to get together, to catch up on news, to entertain, and above all to enjoy good food.

Claire Macdonald’s Lunches is a wonderful collection of recipes to fit the bill whatever your idea of lunch may be. From recipes for business lunches, like Savoury Profiteroles and Goat’s Cheese Roulade, to picnic and packed lunches such as Game Pastries, Scotch Quails’ Eggs or Sausage Hotpot, the author has assembled a collection of truly mouthwatering midday meals. She gives a chapter on Brunch, that halfway house, including favourites like Kedgeree, Eggs Benedict and Muffins, as well as the more unusual Pigs in Blankets, and a selection of starters and main courses for special occasion lunches. Invaluable ideas for children’s lunches are also provided, as are a selection of irresistible puddings.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely fabulous 14 Nov 2000

Superb. The best cookery book I have ever read. Perfect ideas for children aswell as adults. Quick and easy ideas for light lunches, and more filling heart warming winter dishes. I always enjoy Claire Macdonald's commentaries which accompany the different chapters. Even my father can use it for his own cooking purposes which shows how easy the book is to follow and it even has made him more adventurous in the kitchen!

1.0 out of 5 stars Lunches? - only for the upper crust 17 Feb 2004
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
I found this book very disappionting as it adapts a rather aloof and snooty tone towards the concept of lunch and presumes that everyone will be able to come by vension or pheasant easily(caught on the their estate naturally) Also in the picnic lunch section the author includes such outdoor 'classics' such as irish stew, beef casserole and roast guinea fowl dishes. Quite how or why anyone would make or transport these hot dishes on a picnic does not seem to have entered the authors head - but then I would imagine that her servants would be doing the majority of the legwork.

Verdict - its lunch but not as i know it

4.0 out of 5 stars Great reference 14 Jan 2010

When in Scotland...Here is an author that has a variety of cookbooks to offer. Do I own them all, Yes! This particular one has some great recipes for the everyday and for impressing.

Curios about some menus for lunch, this is the choice to get an overview selection. The author owns a lodge in Scotland and hosted a cooking show there. The author's cookbooks came highly recommended by a Scottish woman that I travelled with in the Highlands.

Before adventuring to Scotland, check out this author!
