Review

"The pictures and lovely production values are another clue to the appeal within these covers, and on the whole this bears the mark of distinction I expected when I saw this author had started a series for a younger audience. I am a bit of a fan of his, and with six of these books to eventually choose from (this is number three) - if anything like this quality - they will set him up with a fanbase to last well into the future." (THE BOOKBAG )

"Castle Otherhand is a murky, shadowy place at the best of times, but it's got even scarier with the arrival of a horrible school master. Solstice and her brother Cudweed are trying their best to come out winning - and they are lucky they've got the bird Edgar on their side! ...Once you've met them, you will want to finish the book to find out what happens to them! Scary at times, but with a great plot, I recommend this book to other children over the age of eight." (Sebastian age 9 FIRST NEWS )

"As told by a raven, this Gothic horror richly laced in humour is a delicious read, especially when the moon is full! Castle Otherhand is beset by problems. There are the usual ones of money troubles but this time there is a horrible new teacher who smells like a wet dog to contend with and Solstice and Cudweed are at his mercy. Enjoy all the usual - and decidedly unusual - happenings in this richly created world." (Julia Eccleshare LOVEREADING )

"If you've not yet entered the topsy-turvy world of The Raven Mysteries, then you're missing an absolute treat. Sedgwick's wonderful creation of a rather dysfunctional family is as original as it is weird and kids of 7+ will love the rather oddball humour and quirky characters including Edgar, the Raven who is also the Guardian of Otherland Castle and its secret weapon." (LOVEREADING.COM )

"The quality of the writing here is exceptionally high and is equally matched by Pete Williamson's stylish illustrations which perfectly convey the narrative in his evocative, Goreyesque black and white line drawing. High production values make this a wonderfully collectable book and a great addition to the series." (BOOKS FOR KEEPS )

Daughter tore open the packaging to get to the 3rd instalment of this book! Giggles and smiles all the way and read half of it within the first evening, she can't wait for the next book already, fantastic set of books and always a pleasure to read aloud or be read to with these silly, funny, and very lovely stories.

Lunatics and Luck 2 Mar 2010
By Jenny, Wondrous Reads TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Hardcover
My favourite family is back in the third instalment of The Raven Mysteries series, and they're just as crazy as ever, making each book funnier than the last. Ridiculous inventions, near-death experiences and a new teacher shake things up in Lunatics & Luck, and Castle Otherhand is a mad house once again.

Mr. Brandish, the children's mysterious new teacher, is a fun addition to the cast of kooky characters, and gives Solstice and Cudweed a new reason to cause havoc in their family home. Without Edgar the raven, all hell would break loose, the baby twins would no doubt be dead, and I'm sure Minty would have left Lord Valevine by now. I mean, how many more useless inventions can she take? One of them has to work soon, or I think Valevine will find himself rustling up a bachelor pad round the back of the castle grounds.

My personal highlight of Lunatics & Luck is Cudweed's monkey, Fellah, randomly appearing wearing a white wedding dress and smoking a pipe. It sounds ridiculous, it looks ridiculous, and Pete Williamson's illustration of the poor monkey had me laughing my head off for longer than I want to admit. It's occurences like this that make this series one of my favourites to read, and I will eagerly await each volume until Mr. Sedgwick writes the last story of Edgar and Co.

This was the first book I read by Marcus Sedgwick, and am certain it will not be the last. I did not know that it was a series so went straight on to this book, then after finishing it read the rest of them, (in order).

"Lunatics and Luck" is the 3rd book of The Raven Mysteries following after "Flood and Fang" and "Gosts and Gadgets."
The story is full of imagination, mysteris, lunatics and luck. Full of great illustrations by Pete Williamson and an intersting, mysterious, spooky story line with twists and turns and a particularly funny ending, this book will be a great, easy read.

A hairy, howling new school teacher arrives at Otherhand Castle to tutor the 2 children, Solistice and Cudweed, he brings along with him a mysterious, big, heavy, wooden trunk, which everyone is curious about. But everything starts to change, when he arrives and mysterious happenings, start happening! Edgar (the raven) is suspecting it's got to do with the new tutor and his mysterious wooden trunk....

"Lunatics and Luck" is written in first person by Edgar the raven.

This is a great read, full of mystery and fun. I recommend this book to ages 8+, girls and boys.

This is a must read, GET IT, AND YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED!!!!!!!!!
