I find that usually when I get into a "cult" band like Halo (i.e. a band that hasn't broken into the mainstream), that I'm very excited about them for a month or so but then the interest mostly wears off.
The first time I heard Halo was the set that they performed at V2001, a good three years ago now -- I remember hearing those harmonic vocals and haunting melodies for the first time and thinking, "jeez, surely ALL their songs can't sound that good...". It was a while before I tracked them down again and actually got this album, but for six months or so I've been crediting them as my favourite band and recommending them to everybody I know.
The CD opens with haunting feedback, followed by the upbeat opening power chords of "Still Here" ... then Graeme's voice kicks in, and the moment the chorus and the vocal harmonies start you just know that this band is something truly special. And they're surprisingly diverse too, with romantic ballads "Escape" and "Feel", melancholy epics "Here I Am" and "Perfectly Still", "Shine" and "Incinerator" being their more 'pop' numbers, while "Cold Light of Day" and "Sanctimonious" are more Muse-ish -- these two are also the major singles from the album which was probably a mistake in my opinion as these are not the best tracks it has to offer.
Mostly it's the emotional power of the band that attracts me -- a combination of the songwriting, brilliant vocals and guitar tones throughout. I've heard a lot of people compare them to Muse, but after you've listened to them for a while you realise that they're about as different from them as Muse are from Radiohead. In other words it's a similar genre, but a completely different feel.
Having recently heard some of their new material which has only been played live, in particular a great new song called "Every Race", we can only pray that Halo will release another album as soon as possible.

this album delivers much as a debut. opening with STILL HERE, one of Halo's original song the album has a promising opening. perfect harmonies and a very funky bass line, one of the highlights of the album. the best songs in my opinion are STILL HERE, COLD LIGHT OF DAY (ok, a bit repetative after a while and the second single), ESCAPE (a fantastic ballard) SANCTIMONIOUS and INCINERATOR, the song which every Halo gig I've been to has been their closing numbers. A fan favourite is THE VAMPIRE SONG, I find this a bit too repetative, but it certainly does have a mood about it. Their sound could be compared to as quite "muse"-ish, and while not being something completely knew - this is a definate band to watch out for - as they do offer something very special. Rock on Clevedon!!

this album rocks! i've liked halo for ages, and got the album as soon as it came out. people are saying they're like muse and comparing them to all different bands, but thats just wrong coz they have their own sound and it rocks! so buy this if u haven't already got it and it won't dissapoint you. although they're not like other bands, if u like jj72 or serafin and that kinda thing i guess u'll like this. and halo are touring early in 2004 so i recommend that u go and see them!

I got Lunatic Ride for Christmas. I'd added it to my wishlist after I heard Sanctimonious, without ever having heard of Halo before. When I got it, I shrugged and half-heartedly converted it to mp3 format for my portable media player. It was around a week before I got around to listening to it, and it blew me away. I wasn't prepared for how good it is.
I listened to the first couple of tracks, and waited for the filler material that inevitably turns up in the second half of an album, and instead I got an entire album of excellent and addictive songs. I've had the whole album on my playlist since I got it, and I keep going back to Shine. I'm embarrassed to admit it, but when I'm alone I sing along like a dork.

I bought this album many years ago and I still think that it is something a bit special. I too looked at this thinking it was Muse, and although I can hear what people were on about I was pleasantly surprised to find a collection of pretty unique, but generally wonderful songs. 4 years on I am still listening to it regularly and wishing there were more albums from this great band... I would certainly recommend it simply because I am still loving it.... that should be recommendation enough.

Absolutely beautiful album. Incredibly talented group and having seem them live numerous times, thoroughly nice guys. Beautiful harmonies and I promise these songs will stick in your head. There's not many albums that i'd say you need in your life but this is one of them! Still haven't given up hope on a follow-up...*hint hint* boys!
