The first chapter is very cryptic and I had a hard time trying to figure out the meaning behind what was going on. At the beginning of the second chapter you find out that the cryptic message was a dream that Ariel was having.
Ariel and Henry are still hiding their relationship from everyone around them, including Theo (Ariel's best friend-since Jenna's passing). A new student Harlow Briggs begins at Hawthorne High.
Turmoil continues to be a factor in most aspects of Ariel's life. Jenna has come to terms with her death but is still lingering, Theo's father-Richard-pushes the boundaries of being a slack dad with his negative emotions towards Theo's passion (art) and her dreams. Richard demeans Theo which is why she is such a perfectionist. Claire and Hugh are in the midst of a tumultuous point in their relationship. It appears that Hugh is having an affair with Callie (the school nurse) and Claire wants to join the Thornhill society.
Ariel sticks up for Sarah (a classmate) and becomes the target of Harlow Brigg's anger. Now she is on the hit list for two mean girls (Lainey and Harlow). Lainey and Madison have a colossal fight, leaving Madison sobbing in the bathroom and Lainey trailing after Harlow. When Ariel confronts Madison in the bathroom she finds her planner which suggests that Madison had some doubts as to Lainey's involvement with Jenna's disappearance. When Ariel calls Madison to ask her about her suspicions they agree to meet up and compare notes on what they know about the Thornhill Society.
Once again with mystery and intrigue Ms. Boyd does not disappoint.
