Biography

The distinctive sound of Libera has travelled the world in the last few years. The group's albums have topped both mainstream and classical charts in many countries, and their recordings hold their place in top-tens alongside major artists like Bocelli.
The boys who make up the vocal band Libera have been described as “normal” and “ordinary”. However, as their ... Read more in Amazon's Libera Store

Luminosa is the follow-up to London boys' vocal group Libera's popular 1999 eponymous debut. That album made the pop charts and found the group--they prefer to be called a real boy band rather than a choir--on television with Lesley Garrett. Of the 12 new tracks, half are arrangements of familiar classical melodies. Saint-Saëns' Carnival of the Animals is represented by a mysterious reinterpretation of "Aquarium", rather than "The Swan" suggested by the cover. Of the remaining pieces one is an arrangement of the traditional "Gaudete", and five are new compositions by Libera's director, Robert Prizeman. His "Silencium", a setting of Walter de la Mare's "All That's Past", has the haunting calm of Enya, while "Sabat" carries the boys' voices to the top of their range to ghostly effect. Drawing on the entire classical tradition, from the plainsong of "Veni Sancte" to a decidedly incongruous remake of Beethoven's Symphony No.7, Prizeman weaves a New Age tapestry from beautiful young voices and polished production techniques. Classical purists will be aghast at Handel and Debussy sharing space with digital sound sculpting, which leaves Luminosa free to find a home as easily accessible, superior background music. --Gary S Dalkin

As one who has only recently discovered Libera by seeing the 'Vespera' video on Classic FM TV, I visited their website, more through curiosity than anything else. After hearing some of the audio clips and seeing their videos, I felt I had to purchase the 'Luminosa' CD. I can honestly say that the music on that disc is the most moving and emotional I have ever heard. I defy anyone to listen to it and still have dry eyes at the end! The sheer beauty of the music and the complexity of the harmonies - particularly when one remembers that the boys are all aged 7 to 14 - takes you on an emotional journey that has to be experienced.
Truly Magnficent!

I saw this choir several years ago on a tv programme I loved the music I bought the first CD LIBERA and played it so often I had to buy a second copy so my husband could have a copy to.We have waited in anticapation for another cd to be released. After waiting patiently we found LUMINOSA was it going to be as good as the first cd? was it ever, Its lovely, the Ave Maria is sung from a childs soul, I would recomend this cd to any LIBERA fans or any one who loves tradition and modern mixed. Im not very good with words nor am I a music critic but if you have a love of choirs singing christian music this is the cd for you.

Whilst not quite as breathtaking as Libera, this is still a must-have for all Libera fans. New soloists make a pleasant change - especially Steven Geraghty and Ben Crawley. However the overall "Libera" sound doesn't change which makes it gloriously beautiful.

Luminosa--as a recording--is not just a nice CD to purchase, but it is a monumental feat in the "marriage" of fine choral arrangements with hand-chosen voices of enchanting quality!
I have been involved in choral work for years, singing everything from Handal's Messiah to Bach's "Jesu, Joy..." to Beethoven's choral 9th Symphony.
Point? These arrangements are not just nice---they are elegant!
I have never heard such voices--voices that are analogous to clarion Piccolo trumpets--and yet simultaneously possessing the richess of Horns in F.
Further, all of the soloists sing with VERY fine precision, and yet they have that MAGIC which I call "The Gift". It is the same gift of spontinaity and freshness that the immortal Sergei Rachmaninoff had in each and every one of his piano performances. These boys can do exactly what Rachmaninoff did in vocal form : deliver sheer immensity of power, or deliver flower-like delicacy and sound genuine and it never sounds hackneyed. For example, when I personally listened to Semele [an arranged piece of Geo. Frederick Handal]for the first time, I sat spellbound as Ben Crawley's voice opened the piece. At live volume [on a good system] it was like being at the Royal Albert Hall, and I was only 12 feet from him. It was an utterly moving experience, as great as I have ever had in the choral field of music. Nothing surpassed the sonority of that voice!
And may I add for you musically-technical buffs, the musical TRANSPARENCY of his and the other voices defy description. This CD is, in my estimation, a bona-fide benchmark in choral work. This CD is surely exemplary of the art of choral music.

On first hearing this CD I was reminded of Adiemus, LLoyd Webber's Requiem and Enigma. This is a beautiful mix of classical and the oft abused 'new age' - a blend that is totally successful here. The music lends a perfect backdrop to the soaring beauty of the boys' voices, never overwhelming, simply providing the perfect counterpoint. It is guaranteed to move the emotions, especially the aptly named Lacrimosa. We rushed to get a copy of the first CD - Libera - on the strength of this one and were rather disappointed, but that does need clarification. This one is very definitely more along the lines of Enigma that Luminosa, and as such the voices are an adjunct to the music rather than the reverse as is true on Luminosa. The music has more of a beat and at times that was rather intrusive - to the detriment of the voices. Luminosa, on the other hand, truly does give these wonderful voices the opportunity to shine, which they do incandescently. If you are more attuned to new age/pop then Libera would probably be best for you, but if you lean more towards a classical bent then Luminosa will be a treasured part of your music library.

These young gentlemen have a beautifully blended sound and fantastic balance in their voices. From a choirist's aspect, I wish my choir was able to have the vowel sounds that these boys have. They are truely incredible. To the conductor, you have done a marvelous job enhancing these boys'voices and letting the world enjoy it all. Hats off to you and the boys!!!
