How do Bodyclock dawn simulators work?

Bodyclock Elite 300 wakes you up gradually with a simulated sunrise. The brightening light brings you gently out of sleep, prompting your body to suppress the sleep hormone melatonin while increasing hormones like cortisol to help you get up and go. It provides a fantastic start to the day for sufferers of SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) and helps non-morning people to feel brighter and more energetic.

Waking to natural light resets your sleep/wake cycle and has been shown to boost your mood, productivity and energy levels all day. Our physiological body clocks are aligned by sunrise and sunset and can be thrown into disarray by modern life. We feel tired and stressed waking early for work or school. Bodyclock restores the rhythm, helping you feel awake during the day and ready to sleep at night.

Rich suite of features for perfect mornings and nights

With Elite 300 you can customise the sunrise and sunset settings, and draw on the sound of AM/FM radio , spoken word, white noise, sleep meditation tracks or music from your own MP3 tracks. It can be used as a normal bedside light, and comes with with a snooze function, back-up beeper and power back-up.

Bodyclock Elite 300 is a certified medical device EC93/42

Designed to help with SAD, winter blues and other waking and sleeping difficulties, it conforms to European standards and carries the correct CE mark. Bodyclock has been proven effective by clinical trials and comes with clear usage guidelines.

I don't normally write reviews but thought I would for this product. I've had my Lumie Bodyclock for nearly three years and can honestly say, I wouldn't be without it. I use a 30 minute sunrise in the morning to help me get up and this is particularly helpful when it's dark outside in winter.

I also really like the sunset. I find that when I use it in the evening, I often can't remember the light going out as by that time I've already drifted off to sleep!

The radio element is also a great option if I want to listen to music after I'm awake and I do sometimes use the guided sleep sounds as I find it relaxing listening to the lapping sound of waves as I can imagine I'm on a beach!

It has made a huge difference, I have always hated alarm clocks and the thought of being woken up by anything noisy fills me with dread. I have had this for just over a year now, it was my Christmas present from my partner and I simply love it. At the beginning I thought the light would be more "sun like" rather than just a normal looking bulb, but it does work, especially in the winter as the light is very soft to begin with and increases in intensity within 30 minutes and it's never failed to wake me up. There are various alarm choices, of the acoustic variety too in fact, should you need these, and I have loved the 'flash' alarm which I have used in the summer when outside was light enough for the sunrise alarm not to make much difference. The "flash" alarm will flash the light rather than increase in intensity gradually, thus waking you up with no noise. Bliss. The overall results are amazing, no more waking up grumpy and with headaches and just wishing I was still in bed. Instead my mind has had time to adjust to being awake gradually. For insomniacs the range of relaxing sessions to listen in bed are rather good, or if you own your own sleep induction files you can put them on a memory card and plug them in (or whichever music you want to listen too to fall asleep or to wake up with). I would recommend it especially to people who like me are unable to simply open their eyes and bounce out of the bed ready for the day.

I recently purchased this light following a diagnosis of seasonally affective disorder. Being woken up by a light that brightens gradually was very pleasant, hence it would a very good alarm clock, however it would definitely NOT warrant its price, this should be MUCH cheaper. So far as SAD is concerned, this light is just not light enough to be therapeutic - its only good enough for standard winter blues.

I particularly liked the idea on this top end model of being able to play MP3 files to wake up, hence my paying the high price. Despite reading the manual and seeing that it should take an SD card (up to 4 GB) it failed to recognise the card I bought for it. When I inquired with customer services they said 'it seems to work better with some older cards around 1 or 2 GB. At this price it should work with ANY SD Card up to 4GB. SD Cards are after all A STANDARD. Today it really should take any HDSD card as well - thus allowing it to use whatever card came out of a camera or MP3 player.

Customer service was however good, they agreed to accept the return of the light when I told them I was unhappy. They really need to get this working with any reasonable SD-Card and get the price gown quite considerably. This was a nice idea in theory, the light was physically very solid, the customer service was great, but as said the price needs to come down and SD issue needs to be sorted out. Be quite clear though, it would then be a very good alarm clock, not a treatment for genuine SAD.

I've used this for a few days now. I do feel more refreshed in the mornings which is great considering I had to go to bed at 3:30am one night. However, I spent more for the ELITE in order to get the MP3 feature, but its really disappointing. Firstly, you have to put the MP3s on a specific basic SD card. Most people don't know what this means, or have the equipment necessary to copy MP3s onto an SD card. It should be a USB secondly and most annoyingly, it only plays one track once when the alarm sounds. It doesn't play through all the MP3s on the SD card and it doesnt choose one at random. The same one every time unless you change it. Overall, the MP3 features are too limited for the additional £50 cost compared to the next model down the range.

We really gave this alarm clock a good try but it never worked properly or as expected. We followed the instructions to the letter; set one alarm, default sunrise settings, birdsong alarm, pressed the button to activate the alarm...and...it didn't go off the next morning. Check all the settings the next night, button still pressed, still nothing. Then randomly, five days later, the alarm went off, we have no idea why, but for three days it worked. Sunrise light and birdsong alarm at 07:30am. Lovely. Then, just as randomly, it stopped working again, just as we were beginning to trust it (and rely on it). We turned the alarm off and decided to try again at the weekend.

Well, the four days the alarm was off (button not pressed, so time display not dimmed) we were surprised to find the light from the time display kept us awake at night. It was actually brighter than 'the sun fully risen' light. We've always been told that lights in the bedroom (charging lights, standby lights etc) are not good, my wife could read by the light from the time display.

We decided to return the clock, the randomness of why it worked on some days and not others made it unreliable, the added fact of the bright time display made it an irritation in the dead of the night and, weighing up the high cost, made the sound of birdsong for three days a tad expensive. We wish it had been better and worked as expected.
