Format:Audio CD
This album gives a good impression of the unique style of french baroque during the period. Although it represents very early baroque music, sometimes almost with a renaissance-like sound, it is very powerful and appealing. Listen to Lully and and discover how his unique style and talent later has influenced such composers as Telemann and Händel.
The quality of recording is not the best as it is rather low in amplitude, but for track 16 "2nd Air Pour Les Matelots Jouans", which is very loud and perfomed partly on kazoos (!). The performances of orchestra and singers is good and interesting.
This album is a bargain and you will listen to again and again discovering new little fantastic pieces over time. Recommended!

This is a lovely CD. It takes you into another world. It is wonderful with a glass of wine at the end of a winter's day. It is incredibly good value. Bizarrely, Lully died by banging his foot with the long staff used by Baroque conductors to beat time, rather like a 17th Century didgeridoo. He developed gangrene in his foot and died.

As with Rameau the music of Lully, some 60 years or so earlier, is not heard very often.
Again, recordings are not that easy to find, and I chose my tried and trusted "ballet" route.
This was music for the "Sun King", Louis 14th and it is beautifully recorded.
Kevin Mallon and the Arcadia cannot be criticised with the added bonus of the economical "Naxos" label..
