Product Description

Product Description

Following the acclaimed release of Mickey Newbury s An American Trilogy box set which was named Mojo s 2011 Reissue of the Year Mountain Retreat, the label Mickey founded in 1995 to self-release his music, is set to reissue another three long out-of-print Newbury albums: Lulled by the Moonlight , Stories from the Silver Moon Cafe and Blue to This Day . Originally released in 1996, as a limited edition CD and only available for purchase from his official website, Lulled by the Moonlight was Mickey s first album of original material for 15 years. He had been without a major record deal since 1981 s Mercury Records-released After All These Years and had distanced himself from the music industry. When it came to recording the album, Mickey s reputation was still such that he was able to draw on a large pool of musicians, including Nashville session legends such as drummers Gene Chrisman and Roger Hawkins, guitarists Reggie Young and Mike Elliot, as well as guitarist Jack Williams, who also played live with Mickey. Conceived as a tribute to Mickey s songwriting hero, Stephen Foster, the title of the album comes from a line in Foster s Beautiful Dreamer and opens with Three Bells for Stephen , a tribute to him in song. This serves as a springboard for a suite of songs dealing with memory, loss and mortality, given added poignancy that, just prior to recording the album, Mickey had been diagnosed with chronic lung disease. Despite his illness, he would continue to record and tour right up until his death in 2002. The songs on the album are linked, in Mickey s unique style, by atmospheric interludes that hark back to the classic run of albums he recorded between 1969 and 1981. This new edition of Lulled by the Moonlight is housed in a digisleeve with cover art (a vintage 1903 tinted photograph) taken from the collection of Mickey s friend Walter Sill (the founder of 70s Wild West/Country Music theme park, Kaintuck Territory) and includes a 20-page booklet of lyrics.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Dreamer 5 Nov 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
"Lulled By The Moonlight", originally released in 1996, was Mickey Newbury's first album containing new materiel for 15 years. He dedicated it to Stephen Foster, the 19th century father of American songwriters, who is still revered 150 years after his death through such enduring songs as "Beautiful Dreamer", "Jeannie With The Light Brown Hair" and "Oh! Susannah". If Mickey Newbury ever aspired to be the equal of Foster his dreams were surely realised because in 1980 he was the youngest songwriter ever to be inducted into The Nashville Songwriters' Hall Of Fame. This accolade was in recognition of his exquisitely crafted songs recorded by a host of performers from Elvis Presley, ("American Trilogy") to Tom Jones, ("Funny, Familiar. Forgotten Feeling") and Andy Williams, ("Sweet Memories").

And so, it is not surprising that Mickey Newbury is better known as a songwriter than as a recording artist and, in a sense, that is sad because the Newbury canon is replete with the most magnificent albums. It is a tragedy that their critical acclaim was not matched by any commercial success.

By the time Mickey recorded "Lulled By The Moonlight" he had already been diagnosed with the emphysema that would eventually claim his life six years later at the age of 62. But this superb album does not bear any witness to the ravages of the disease as his haunting tenor suffuses the songs with alternate shades of elegance, tenderness, joy, sadness and grace in this work of contrasts.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lulled by the Moonlight....and the artist! 26 Feb 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Re-released a short time ago. Seemed a competitive price for 'new' release. I hadn't heard much from the album and rate Mickey Newbury very highly. Delighted I purchased this album. Strong lyrics as always and delivered with a sensitivity as always. Gone but not forgotten. Buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars For All You Dear Hearts and Gentle People 26 Feb 2000
By Joey Latunski - Published on Amazon.com

This CD is the perfect complement to any of Mickey's previous releases. Although not a part of the 8 CD "Collection" it compares equal or better than your favorite Newbury album. LBTM takes you on a stroll down dream lane and lets you drift off. "Three Bells For Stephen", "Amen For Old Friends" and "Shades of '63" take you back and rewards you with memories of years gone by. "Captured In Blue" is perhaps one of the most sentimental wedding songs ever written. The master lives on!

5.0 out of 5 stars MICKEY HITS ANOTHER HOME RUN 22 Nov 2001
By S. F Gulvezan - Published on Amazon.com

In ny opinion, the two greatest and under-appreciated singer-songwriters of the past forty years are Gene Clark and Mickey Newbury. Gene's been dead for 10 years, but just in the last few years his music has been starting to get the attention it deserves. Mickey, God bless him, is still alive and doing just fine, as this CD attests. It is one of his best, and that is saying a lot. The songwriting is superb, the music is perfect, and Mickey's in great voice. Mickey's unique blend of country/folk/jazz/rock is beyond my powers of description - like Gene, he is able to write songs that are profound, moving, and musically lovely. Although his songs have been covered by a multitude of other artists, he has never been given a tiny fraction of the attention he deserves as a performing musician. His own versions of his songs are often the best. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Something old, Something new 10 Jun 2009

Love never dies. Like a diamond, different facets show different colored lights at different times. Mickey renews old songs, brings us some new songs, there is one borrowed, and one captured in blue. You're sitting with an old guy who is looking back on his life, maybe you're at a wedding, maybe just a bar.
Generations of love and dreams are gathered in a room. We get a sample of every heartbeat & story there.
This is my favorite Newbury recording. One word? Exquisite. From the 1st tune to the last. Over the years, as friends and family have moved away or passed on (like Mickey), I can always find comfort in this recording. One or two songs, or on a rainy night, the whole thing.
Listen closely to the arrangements, the musicians, the lyrics, and most of all, to what I have always called "God's own cello", the voice of Mickey Newbury, at its best.
RIP, Mickey!

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning! Stunning! Stunning! 27 April 2008

This is an absolutely gorgeous CD. The musicians who accompany Newbury are wonderful, also. This CD contains two of the hard-to-find songs "What Will I Do (in the Dead of the Night)" and "Ramblin' Blues" as well as 15 others, most of which are not included in his box set. Also contains some nice instrumental interludes. Highly recommended. In case you're interested, here are the names of the other songs:

Just Another Lovely Day
Blue Sky Shining

Freight Train Howlin'

5.0 out of 5 stars Lulled By Mickey 7 May 2013
By Rev. Keith D. Jenkins - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
While the music on this classic album leans much more to Blues and Folk than Country (and what else would you expect from a project dedicated to the Father of American Songwriting, Stephen Foster), it is a fascinating collection which offers insight into the mind of a musical legend and an hour of pure enjoyment for fans of great American music.
