2 words come to mind - ANGRY, POWER!

wow, what a stunning piece of work from Steve Lukather, toto's guitarist on top form here!
This album is so strong throughout, not a bad track in sight. the vibe I get from this album is that Luke wasn't in the best place when he conducted this work.
You can feel his anger and his guitar playing is on fire! you will be singing along to every track as they are beautifully and thoughtfully written.
the lyrical content is FANTASTIC - never have I heard anyone just say it like it is.
recommended for anyone who wants to listen to this when they are annoyed at the world or women for that matter, it's great medicine.

Album highlights:

Broken Machine - Haunting guitar licks during the chorus.
Reservations to live - such a true song.
Love the things you hate - Awesome guitar riffs.
Bluebird - Screaming down the pickups to finish the album = epic

HASH(0x942e7e64) out of 5 stars Luke's Pen now mightier than his sword. 13 Jan. 2000

I notice that Luke has some co-writers on various songs. But if he is the motive force behind the lyrics, then he really is letting us see into his soul. His guitar playing, superb as always although conventional, is cast into relief by the strength and meaning of the words.

What a great cd. Steve Lukather is with out a doubt one of the best guitar players around today. The thing that sets him apart is the ability to write catchy songs with deep lyrics. This is a superb rock album, covering all styles from hard rock, pop, and even a little bit of country. If you want a great rock album that sticks in your mind long after you have turned it off, GET THIS CD!!!

HASH(0x943f25f4) out of 5 stars LUKE - STEVE LUKATHER 16 Nov. 2003
By Will Minting - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Steve Lukather's 3rd solo album is, in his own words, "...a bit of a departure...this record is the closest amalgamation of all the different facets of me than anything I have recorded in the past..." LUKE encompasses a variety of catchy tunes, intense flavours, raw sounds and awesome playing; it also features inspired songwriting collaborations with Fee Waybill, Phil Soussan, Randy Goodrum and Rodney Crowell. The record kicks off with the dark, gutsy and driven riff of The real truth. Cool hook, great harmony vocals and a mindblowing guitar solo. My personal favourite is Love the things you hate, another monster groove with Gregg Bissonette and Phil Soussan, enhanced by Luke's own electric sitar performance. Tears of my own shame is Hendrix-esque and Hate everything about you is Dylan-esque; the album also includes Stephen Stills' Bluebird. In addition to vocal, guitar and sitar, Luke plays a variety of vintage keyboards and harmonica which add a spectrum of interesting tones and colours. In addition to contributing his sublime talents to hundreds of top 40 records, Steve Lukather is a musicians' musician. For me, this record is the epithesis of that talent. Get your teeth stuck into this one!

HASH(0x941df7b0) out of 5 stars Great Stuff 17 Nov. 2001

What can I say! Steve is a great song writer and he sings and plays guitar with such soul. A perfect example is the song "Tears of my own Shame" the third track on the album which has got to be my favourite. It has a really smooth, "jimi hendrix" like guitar riff that is just really funky - I just can't stop listening to it.This song's "fav" status is closely followed by several others on the album like "You'd always be there for me" in which he experiments with playing other instruments (he's a multi talented guy) and "Blue bird" is cool too. This is different from his Toto stuff, musicians and guitarists alike will love this album :-)

HASH(0x942e9234) out of 5 stars awesome! 13 Oct. 1999

I'd just sum my review up in a few words. Steve Lukather is without a doubt one of the the best singer/songwriter/guitarists on the planet today! This album shows a side of Steve that you're not going to get on any Toto albums (for the most part). There are influences from country to grunge on this disc, and it does take a few listens to fully appreciate it- but every song on this album is great. Now, only if the U.S record companies would give Steve and Toto the promotion and tour support they deserve, so more people are aware of some awesome music out there!
