Review

Entertaining and well-written, ranging from comic to tragic, giving a valuable insight to the air arm of the Third Reich --Re-enacting World War Two

Product Description

Within weeks of war being declared, Wolfgang Fischer had volunteered to join the Luftwaffe and spent nearly five of the succeeding six years of hostilities in uniform. During this time he was given a succession of postings varying from a long-range recce unit; as a decoder in a met office in occupied France; to a bomber squadron; and as a flying instructor, before joining a squadron of the famous Richthofen Geschwader in Italy, from where he was shot down in his FW 190 by Mustangs en route to Normandy. By now a Leutnant, he survived to fly offensive rocket attacks over Gold Beach on D-Day, only to be shot down again on D + 1, and captured and sent first to a hospital in the UK, then into captivity in the USA. He was finally repatriated in April 1946. His description of all these events is entertaining and well-written, ranging from comic to tragic. It is unique in flavour, giving a valuable insight into the undeniably typical lot of those serving in the air arm of the Third Reich. Expertly translated and edited by John Weal, this is a worthy accompaniment to Norbert Hannig s Luftwaffe Fighter Ace published by Grub Street in 2004.

An interesting read. 19 Dec 2010
By Thompson Family VINE™ VOICE
Format:Hardcover
This biography is by an ex-Luftwaffe fighter pilot, Wolfgang Fischer (translated by John Weal), with a happy ending: he survived! An interesting record of pre-war Germany, his Luftwafe training, his years as a flying instructor and finally his brief sojourn as a fighter pilot before been shot down. A very fast read, not bogged down by extraneous detail. For myself I never cease to be amazed at the bravery of these young flyers (from all sides); in this case Wolfgang Fischer launched what seemed to be a solo attack on the D-Day Invasion fleet! I do not wish to spoil a good read. His period as a POW in the United States is also full of interest. An excellent translation by John Weal, with none of the stilted narrative which is often found due to a poor translation. A worthwhile buy; I bought mine signed by the author at the October Duxford airshow which was an added bonus. Another military history book by Grub Street Press.

A good,fast-paced text, well translated. Has interesting content beyond the air combat.
Fischer was one of dwindling band of pilots battling huge Allied air superiority of 1944-45, and ended war as POW--on which he is also interesting.
Recommended.

Not a quality read 12 May 2011
Format:Hardcover
Having read the reviews of previous readers of this book , I was waiting on what was supposed to be a a good book. How I was disappointed , I grant you I'm three quarters of the way through . But, I felt compelled enough to type this review in hope that others won't make the same mistake . I've read Pierre Clostermann , Bob Doe , and Geoffrey Wellum to name but a few. This , well , isn't in there LEAGUE . Those ( Geoffrey Wellum and so on )I would recommend to anyone into Second world war aviation history , even those that aren't , they're that good. This , NO.
