Stunning CD 16 Jan 2009
By David Ashworth - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I bought this CD after reading about it in the Gramophone Magazine. It was given the best Early Music Award for 2008. It is superb. This was my first encounter with this wonderful but neglected English composer his dates are circa 1485-1557. If choral music of the English renaissance appeals to you, Tallis, Taverner, and Tye, et al. Then you should enjoy this CD. Other choral groups I am familiar with such as The Tallis Scholars, and the Sixteen, use female singers for the treble line. Here on this CD boys are used. They sing with remarkable clarity, and sweetness of tone the recording is wonderfully atmospheric. I believe there are more recordings of Ludford's music on the ASV label which I intend to explore. All in all it is a stunning Cd. Buy it and spend an hour in paradise.

An incomparably rich recording 22 Jan 2009
By William Andriette - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Nicholas Ludford's music buzzes with sweet-natured generosity. His long, complex phrasings glide like birds in aerial ballet. For all their expansive sweep and play, Ludford's musical canvases are also intricate. The Choir of New College rises to the challenge of these generous compositions with a broad, open sound that brims with intelligence and comprehension. The men and boys of the choir can both subtly limn the sensitive counterpoint and also convey Ludford's often sheer exuberance. It's a joy to hear this brilliant but neglected music sung so well by the forces for which it was written. Of things to take to exile on the proverbial desert island, this disk would be on my shortlist.
