Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery, most famous for her novel "Anne of Green Gables", published over 500 short stories in her literary lifetime. Dodo Press has captured a selection of these short stories in chronological order in a six-volume set, of which "Lucy Maud Montgomery Short Stories: 1907 to 1908" is the fifth installment.
The twenty-four stories reprinted here demonstrate Montgomery's mastery of the standard magazine short story format of her era. On display is her ability to perform entertaining variations on the themes of romance, plucky orphans, accidents of fate, and happy endings. Also on display is her working out of themes and subplots that would make appearences in later novels. "Millionaire's Proposal" is an early version of a key romomantic subplot in the later novel "Anne of the Island." "Four Winds" bears some resemblance to elements of the novel "Kilmeny of the Orchard."
There is a broad selection of stories. Of particular note, "Marcella's Reward", "The Doctor's Sweetheart", and "The Growing Up of Cornelia" provide sympathetic looks at the challenging romances of young women with older men. "The Parting of the Ways" reverses the plot to pair an idealistic young man with a knowing older woman.
"Lucy Maud Montgomery Short Stories: 1907 to 1908" is very highly recommended to her fans, who will enjoy reading the best of a master author.
