I have for long been fascinated by the holed stones that can be found in profusion on the beaches of Sussex.Some remarkable stories lie behind them, as I discovered when I set about writing this book.

Investigating their origins and potent magic I found myself being led into many strange corners of local superstitions, and witnessed at first hand the powers of a wishing head at Rottingdean, cemented into the garden wall of Rudyard Kipling's old house, The Elms.

I discovered, also, that there is luck in large lumps in this lovely county, hence the title - Lucky Sussex.

A revealing and fascinating book about lucky stones. A wealth of detail about the history of the subject and much food for thought about how lucky stones were created in the first place. My children now don't feel a visit to Sussex is complete without a trip to the beach to find their very own stone. A delightful book which increases the fun of a trip to the beach.

Fans of Brighton will be able to add 'Lucky Sussex' to their list of reasons for loving the place. It's a great little book, packed with local history and it's revolutionised our family trips to the beach. We now always hunt for stones 'with a hole', and have even attempted making garden sculptures with them.
