Panda Power 24 Oct 2010
By The Wolf TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD
Gold Panda may or may not be a man called Derwin Panda. It is likely, however, that
he is mostly English and that he doesn't shave as often as some others of his species.

The album 'Lucky Shiner' has less ambiguity about it than its creator.
It is, in fact, a perfect joy to listen to. This is electronica with a heart.
The man and his machines have worked hand in hand to breathe life
into the eleven tracks which comprise this delightful collection.

There are beats that you can twitch and jive to and there are other moments
of deeper, quieter and disquieting intensity. 'Parents' is a particularly
affecting example - a simple reflective acoustic guitar line laced with
half-heard whispering voices and distant birdsong. Enchanting.

The melodic and rhythmic components of the bouncier tracks prove to
be quite addictive with familiarity. I particularly enjoyed the sparkly
single-mindedness of 'Snow & Taxis', a composition full of light and
good feeling. 'Before We Talked' sounds a little like a deconstructed
quick-step at a summer ball for insects. All those twitchy little legs fighting
for some space on the floor in a bid for syncopated self-expression!
'Vanilla Minus' offers a fascinating example of stripped-down minimalist
funk decorated with high-flying luminous extraterrestrial synth chords
and 'I'm With You But I'm Lonely' is a meltingly beautiful tapestry of
shifting waves of quasi-oriental ambient sound shot through with
tin-soldier percussion and something approximating an old-fashioned
typewriter rattling and chattering away like a mad thing deep down in the mix.
Final track 'You', with its fragmented ghostly voice, brings this tantalising
project to a haunting and curiously affecting conclusion.

The mysterious Mr Panda is to be warmly congratulated for this captivating work.

Highly Recommended.

Wow! 15 Oct 2010
Format:Audio CD
I'm not going to say much except after listening to this I'm feeling a bit like I felt when I had heard Boards of Canada, Autechre or Burial for the first time. He sounds like all of them and still has a very unique sound of his own. Something extra special is brewing right here!

Great album over all.

Tunes like 'Same Dream China' or 'Marriage' are sheer genius, however some of the others are just average.

Considering how young this guy is and his lack of exposure to some music types (I came to this conclusion after reading several interviews), I just can't wait to see what he comes up with with a little more knowledge, money and tech.

This is his chance.

Recommended listening!
