About the Author

John Sherriff is the former CEO of Enron Europe, based in London, which was one of the largest commodity-trading organizations in the world. Enron traded in European, Australian, and Japanese electricity, European natural gas markets, and worldwide oil, credit, and metals markets. Prior to joining Enron in 1994, he was a vice president at American Hunter Energy, and before that, he acted as director of corporate sales at Pacific Gas & Electric Company in San Francisco. For the last 10 years, his business has been investing in commercial lawsuits with Lake Tahoe Financial, in which he buys a share of the plaintiff’s potential proceeds in their litigation. This is a high-risk, high-reward business. John holds a B.S. in Mathematics and an M.S. in Computer Science from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo (earned in a prior millennium).

5.0 out of 5 stars Great and practical business insight! 2 Sept. 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
This book is full of useful insights about business, with tons of examples to highlight the real-world application of the insights. The author groups his insights and examples into the "four stages of business" -- "Find It, Decide, Go For It, and Fix It" -- which makes the material as practical as it is entertaining. In fact, in addition to the examples sprinkled throughout the book, the author walks through eight additional real-world business applications towards the end of the book to demonstrate his ideas in action. I give this book top marks for both entertainment value and practical usefulness!

I was lucky enough to spend 4 working years alongside John Sherriff in the late 1990's and early 2000's at Enron. And this book perfectly captures his personality - it's almost like he is narrating it to me in a conference room in Central London, the home of Enron Europe.
The book is much, much than an Enron tale though. It is informative, concise, clear and articulate. A fascinating read, cover to cover.
One of the sad consequences of the Enron story was that thousands of friendships were immediately terminated. And as people went to ground (a natural result of the situation at the time), those relationships were mostly lost forever. And that was very sad indeed.
Thanks John, it was good to get back together - even if it was in print.

This book is written in very accessible language. The author clearly understands the concepts very well as he explains them so clearly in every day, layman terms. It's entertaining and certainly educational with some very lively, real world examples. This book would be a great read for anyone facing decisions in an uncertain world, ie everyone. Entrepreneurs will be much better prepared by this book than by most of the typical business literature as this book more clearly warns them that "Life Happens." This book prepares the reader better to deal with it when it does.

Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very good read 28 Sept. 2013

A well-written and entertaining book.

The author systematically (and innovatively) lays down certain principles to apply to business, and links them to his own experiences at Enron and other big and small enterprises.

Very good value too (I paid 0 pence) - I sense his decision to sell his book at this price demonstrates one of the themes in the book: Trading on Multiple Dimensions" ... Is he thinking of becoming an established writer, or just promoting his litigation funding business? Applying the techniques in this book, is he almost certain to succeed?

5.0 out of 5 stars Good. 26 Sept. 2013

This is a very good read. If you are interested in trading, gambling, Enron, or market psychology, then this very-accessible and quick-reading book is *the* one to slam into your kindle or iPad before your next long plane trip. When he was interviewing leading officers for promotion, it was said that Napoleon's first question was "are you lucky?" If there was a moment's hesitation, then no promotion. John Sherriff's book provides excellent insights into why that's always a good question to ask: most of all, of yourself. I highly recommend it.
