Something strange is going on at HM Prison Long Rudford. The hard men of B wing are going soft. They've turned thesp, for an awfully amateur production of the prison governor's musical - Nelson. But all is not what it seems. Behind the theatrical posturing lies an elaborate escape plan. Ring leaders Jimmy and Rudy have come up with what they consider a watertight scheme to coast their way to freedom. But all is not plain sailing. First Jimmy falls for Annabel, the beautiful prison support office and his co-star, then the head of Prison security becomes suspicious about the inmates intentions. Will it be curtains for Jimmy and his gang, or will they pull off the performance of their lives? This was a great film. I had never heard of it, and caught it on late TV one evening. James Nesbitt does a great job, Bill Nighy hams it up dreadfully for England and enjoys himself enormously, the backdrop of the musical preparation, as cover for the prison break, is so silly yet completely entertaining. The main chorus for the musical is awful but hilarious, in a "the office" sort of way. Timothy Spall is slightly typecast but touching. The only weak spot, if any, is the romance, which is not credible, I guess its the way to get the main character to do the right thing. Highly recommended.

Lucky Break is one of the best prison films I have ever seen, and has humour and good scripts. The film features a very good cast of actors including James Nesbitt, Bill Nighy and Timothy Spall. Highly recommended if you like prison films like this one.
