Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

It's probably not a complete coincidence that Star Wars: Battlefront comes out on exactly the same day as the original trilogy (or at least what's left of it after the Special Editions) DVD box set. The fact that Battlefront sounds like a lot like Battlefield (as in 1942, Vietnam etc) is also probably not entirely down to chance, since this is essentially a Star Wars-ified version of EA's online classic.

As such the game features first or third person shoot-'em-up gameplay over 15 different environments from both the classic trilogy and the not-so classic trilogy. Unfortunately you can't mix and match the different eras, so each of the two sets of opposing factions have to stick to their own levels.

Although the game has a much stronger single player mode than its PC based inspiration, the heart of the game is still the multiplayer mode that allows for up to 16 players online playing as more than 20 different soldier types, which sadly doesn't include Ewoks or Gungans (although the former are at least in the Endor levels as non-player characters). There are more than 30 different authentic Star Wars weapons to use (although not, as far as is known, lightsabers) and 30 different vehicles to pilot, including Scout Walkers, X-wings and speeder bikes.

Despite its obvious steals from the Battlefield series Star Wars: Battlefront is shaping up to be a more than worthy title on its own, with excellent graphics, plenty of variety and, most important of all, the chance to essentially "play" Star Wars, except with virtual characters instead of action figures.--David Jenkins

This preview is based on an incomplete version of the game; features or problems mentioned above may not appear in the finished game.

4.0 out of 5 stars Use the force Luke - but not too much 18 Oct 2004
This is a pretty slick game and is perfect for X-Box Live. I'm a major fan of the Star Wars films and have been waiting for a studio to make full use of the licence and translate the epic battles from the films into a decent game. There have been several half-baked attempts so far for the X-Box which have all been disappointing for me. I'm glad to say - with the exception of a few niggles - that this is great fun.
The primary aim is to capture all checkpoints to cut off enemy reinforcements and prevent them pushing forwards. You can win by killing all enemy troops instead of course!
You get to play 3 different single-player modes - "Instant Action" (where you charge into a battle straight away), "Historical Campaign" (a story-based game where you follow a timeline of events and try to win battles on each planet at a time, unlocking exclusive bonus goodies along the way) and "Galactic Conquest" (where you get to choose the planet to attack next, and on winning a battle you get to choose a planetary bonus like bringing a Jedi Hero - like Darth Vader or Luke Skywalker - into the battlefield to support you!)
There are different factions you can play as, including Rebel Alliance, Imperial Forces, Trade Federation CIS and Clone Warriors, each with their own different weapons, vehicles and soldier types. Sadly no chance to play the Gungans, Ewoks, Sand People or Jawas, although they do make their appearance on the battlefield.
You have to win two battles to conquer a planet. There are many different planets from the Star Wars universe here, including Kashyyyk and Rhen Var, alongside well-known ones like Tatooine, Mos Eisley, Cloud City, Naboo and Geonosis.

5.0 out of 5 stars Star Wars at the sharp end 5 Oct 2004
I bought this game partly because I'm a Star Wars fan, partly because I love shooters and partly because it was flying off the shelves. Forget most of the other reviews - I never understand why people write a review for a game they've never played!! (Obviously this comment doesn't apply to the reviewer who played it at a games fair.)
The basic premise (as stated by Amazon's preview) is that you get to play as a soldier in one of four armies (Rebel, Imperial, Seperatists and Republic).
The single player campaign is great. The object of the game is to capture command posts, while blasting the opposing soldiers to bits. Depending on how well your army is doing you'll have more or less re-inforcements and more respawn points (i.e. the command posts you've captured) and your own actions do affect the outcome of the battle e.g. if you keep ordering soldiers to follow you to a certain enemy command post they will keep attacking it and more AI soldiers will follow.
There are a few varieties on the basic game but the whole focus is get out there and kill stuff. Each time you get killed (and you will often) you get to choose which of five types of soldier you want to be next each comes with different weapons and abilities (basic trooper, heavy weapon, sniper, pilot or special - specials include wookies, troopers with jet packs and destroyer droids).
The real fun is in the feel of the game when you're playing - it's very fast, frantic with the sense of impending doom. Plus you get to fly/drive a number of familiar ships a la Halo if you want, and to blow them up! This is not Halo 2 and doesn't pretend to be - it's a different focus; crazy battles in Star Wars world.
Make no mistake this is a game designed for multiplayer battles, it supports up to 16 players!!.

4.0 out of 5 stars Greatest Star Wars Experience Yet! 2 Oct 2004
I've played many Star Wars games down the years, right back to that wire frame arcade game with the raid on the Death Star right up to Knights of the Old Republic and Star Wars Galaxies, the online game.
Of all of them, only Star Wars Battlefront makes you feel like you are really in the middle of a Star Wars battle. Every scenario seems chaotic with beings, droids, vehicles charging around with blaster fire all over the place.
The game has two modes, single player and multi-player.
Despite what you may have read, the single player game is fun. Yes your AI allies tend to run around like headless chickens - this is no Rainbow 6 - if you instruct them they will occasionally do something useful. Providing firing cover is not one of them though.
There's two reasonably long single player modes. One is a Conquest mode, the other is a Civil War mode, where in each scenario you are put on one side or the other. Sometimes it's Imperial, sometimes it's Rebel. Same goes for the Trade Federation period.
My only concern is that capturing command points/ nodes is not really a great single player experience. That sort of gameplay is really for multi-player games. The developers would have been better off creating a purpose designed single player adventure mode along the lines of Halo. Finally, start on normal or difficult. This isn't hardest of games and that's coming from a mediocre shooter gamer.
The game was primarily designed for multi-player and this is where the gameplay becomes more intelligent.
Unlike the single player game, you can't run through your enemies blasting them away with ease. There's always a real person close by, ready to take you down as soon as you are within firing range. The problem is spotting them amid all the bots running around.
