"This is my hero" NELSON MANDELA"

Product Description

Leeds United's biggest crowd of the 2004-05 season was for a testimonial match. But this was no ordinary testimonial. The 37,889 who packed into Elland Road were paying tribute to Lucas Radebe one of the few players whose name is mentioned in the same breath as the club legends like Don Revie, Billy Bremner, John Charles, Eddie Gray, Peter Lorimer, Jack Charlton and Norman Hunter. The South African international so captured the hearts of Leeds fans that they still chant his name years after he retired and the Kaiser Chiefs band took their name from his first club. In his native land he is an iconic figure, who led his country to two World Cups as they emerged from the sporting wilderness and whose reputation as a player and a man helped convince the rest of the world that the World Cup finals should go to South Africa. The kid who was rescued from the violence of the anti-apartheid struggle in Soweto when his parents sent him away from home for fear he would end up in gaol or even dead, received the ultimate accolade when Nelson Mandela declared: 'He is my hero.' This is the story of how Lucas overcame a tough childhood, survived a shooting, and refused to be diverted from his destiny by injury, homesickness, freezing English winters and terrible English food to become not only a football superstar but acknowledged as one of the nicest people in the game. He was awarded the FIFA Fair Play Award as much for his unstinting work for charities and anti-racism organisations as his immaculate defending. Lucas Radebe's story is much more than just another biography of a footballer. It is inspiring and heart-warming, tinged with tragedy yet marked throughout by his trademark smile that has lit up two continents and touched thousands of lives.

Lucas Radabe's story is a true rags to riches tale. This book not only explains why he is a hero for all leeds united fans but also presents a fascinating insighe into south africa during the appartheid era. Leeds fans will love this book and so too will anyone who has an intrest in sport or south african history.

Amazing. 15 Nov 2010
Format:Hardcover
Ok. Being a life long Leeds fan, I so wanted to read this. Lucas Radebe is probably the nicest guy to ever play pro football, and could well be the best centre back since the great Bobby Moore.

The quote on the cover is no joke. Nelson Mandela loves Lucas, and the UN made him an ambassador for sport all over the world.

Reading this book is a very humbling experience. Radebe came from nowhere and proved that talent can take you anywhere. His story could be a lesson to us all. Superb, majestic footballer, and a wonderful human being.

Whoever you support, read this book. It will make you think about all the overpaid prima donnas in the Prem who are not fit to lace this man's boots

Lucas - if you see this, you are a legend. Your name is still chanted at Elland Road. I wish you were still playing.

READ THIS BOOK.

A great book about one of the recent Leeds United legends. The man is an inspiration. His story, from his humble childhood in Soweto, to captaining both his club through their most successful periods when they were again competing for european glory, and also his country in the World Cup, is an inspiration.

The book is well written and gives a good insight into the character of the man. Torn between loyalty to club and country, and also dealing with both success and tragedy, it makes for an interesting read.

I would recommend this to any Leeds fan, and also to anyone who wishes to learn about a truly inspirational sportsman.
