Book Description

'Tonight it is the concert. Two Prodigies of Nature are coming to play in my lady's ball-room. As soon as the concert begins I understand why the whole world comes to stare and listen.'

Scipio is eleven years old and a lady's page. He plays the harpsichord, speaks French and German, and sings in Italian. But what was appealing and remarkable in a small child is no longer so in a 'hobbledehoy'. And after he meets the two child prodigies, Wolfi and Nannerl, at a concert, Scipio's fate will change forever.

2.0 out of 5 stars Too Short 2 July 2013

Helen Dunmore is one of my favourite authors which is why I assumed I would also enjoy one of her 'singles'. I didn't. It was too short for my liking and left me wishing I hadn't started reading it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fiction sold short? 5 April 2013
Verified Purchase
Helen Dunmore's fiction is always excellent and this story is no exception - but I felt it was a little too short to be a Kindle Single. On the Indie market, stories as short as this are usually sold in threes, as triplets. The story itself is slender - a black child-slave in 18th century Britain makes friends with the young Mozart. He is humiliated by his employer and his life thereafter follows a different path. It is beautifully written, but slight - only 12 Kindle pages at normal font size. Come on Penguin! We want a bit more for our money than this.

1.0 out of 5 stars Rubbish 4 April 2013

Have thoroughly enjoyed other works by Helen Dunmore, but thought this was abysmal. Had trouble understanding why the author had bothered writing this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth a read. 9 Mar. 2013

A satisfying, interesting short story. Like other work by Dunmore, it's well-written. Good for a light break between heavier novels.

3.0 out of 5 stars short songs 27 Feb. 2013
By David B
Interesting story but far too short to stand alone for sale, would have liked to have come across it in a short story compilation though
