This manual is the official definition of Lua 5.1. It covers Lua's syntax and semantics, the full API with C, and the standard libraries. Lua is an extension programming language designed to support general procedural programming with data description facilities. It also offers good support for object-oriented programming, functional programming, and data-driven programming. Lua is intended to be used as a powerful, light-weight scripting language for any program that needs one. Lua is implemented as a library, and is highly portable, being written in clean C (that is, in the common subset of ANSI C and C++). This book is a hardcopy version of the online Lua 5.1 reference manual. I bought it because I wanted to have a printed version beside me while I'm coding, and I'll probably make the occasional note in the margin.

For everyone that uses LUA on a daily basis, this book is absolutelly essential. Needs to sit on your desk at arm's length. Sure you can find all of it's contents in online form. but it's quite nice to be able to browse to its contents if the books is sitting right in front of you.

This is a well written book printed in the last 6 months relating to Lua 5.0 and 5.1 syntax and constructs definition. It is the official manual for defining the language but it is not a programmer's tutorial and a handy hints and tips manual. The printing in book form was an arrangement between The Queen, the printers, and me as liaison with lua.org, with amazon.co.uk as the stockist and affording a low price. There are other books available for versions 5.0, 5' [sometimes 5 mark] and 5.1 software packs which run on specific hardware platforms only.

Informative, but ultimately not that useful.
The best review is to just look at the online docs, of which this is just a printout! The Programming in Lua book is also just a printout, but that was more useful as an offline... Read more
