5.0 out of 5 stars FKA Twigs - A Star is Born 11 Aug 2014
By Red on Black TOP 50 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Audio CD
In her two previous records, the rather prosaically titled EP1 and EP2, the London-based singer and dancer Tahliah Barnett has more than hinted at the potential to release a monster debut album under her moniker of FKA Twigs. In LP1 the promise is signed, sealed and delivered. Here comes one of those artists brimming with such confidence and verve that you wonder how so one so young can be blessed with such talent.

On the surface the album is a mix of trip hop, alternative R&B and sensual balladry. Yet FKA Twigs is one of those boundary spanners who nudges music forward with an extraordinary voice and conquers up a moody down-tempo ambience that reeks of atmosphere. The structure of the songs work perfectly. They are driven by her melodious voice but behind them are fractured beats, throbbing distorted baselines and trippy drum textures, At times it is so delicate that on songs like the gorgeous "Kicks" that you feel it may break. But there is real toughness here not least in the brilliant "Two Weeks" an explicit foray into the world of steamy passions as she breathes "Smoke on your skin to get those pretty eyes rolling/My thighs are apart for when you're ready to breathe in/Suck me up, I'm healing with all the s**t you're dealing". This is sheer slowed down power mined from that rich vein to which Massive Attack once held the rights. Intriguingly there is also a hint of Kate Bush thrown in for good measure.

The good news is it gets better and better. The mid point of the album has a brilliant dual punch. First up is "Pendulum" where you sense she has locked into one song all those elements that James Blake has been striving for two albums to achieve. The vocals are intoxicating and behind them are weird sonics that dart and weave through the song.

5.0 out of 5 stars The new R'n'B template 28 Aug 2014
Format:Vinyl|Verified Purchase
FKA's "EP2" was a stunning 4 track sampler of what was to come. On first listen this full length album somehow initially feels to come up short against it, but with time and replays it somewhat outdoes what has gone before. That is high praise indeed.

Some of the errie silences from EP2 (which sounded like it came from outer space) have been trimmed back here, but there is still plenty of space around the arrangements and instrumentation. Twig's R'n'B credentials come to the fore a lot more, but that is not to say it has no futher appeal than a single genre. Anyone with a love of electronic music will feel right at home here too.

This album reminds me of first listening to Missy Elliot's "Supa Dupa Fly", at the time it was totally unique, with Timbaland's production of chopped up and staccato beats and arrangements, you could just tell it was going to be copied the world over. FKA Twigs debut stands at a similar crossroads (IMO) whereby it will be influential from this point on.

Maybe in time, you will be able to feel space around the next Rn'B template this carves out, a more stripped down, soulful, and less compressed sounding style. FKA's next move will be all the more interesting for it, will she go more commercial and radio friendly, or will the rest of the world change to her style? Or will this make her retreat into another style and template for LP2?

One thing is for sure, if she can come up with the same quality that is on display here, regardless of style, I am following into it!

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW !!! 7 Sep 2014
By Twig
Format:Audio CD
Where has THIS come from? It is the most wonderful cd I've heard in so long. Inventive. Evocative. Melodic, rhythmic, and unbelievably sexy.

There's one track I don't like as much as the others. Numbers. And this might change. But at the moment, it sounds the least extraordinary. As for the others, they are all ten-star favourites already.

Influences, there are a few, from the Kate Bush inflected Two Weeks, to the James Blake wash and stutter of Pendulum, to the Weeknd-infused Give Up. But FKA Twigs is exploring areas of music imo better than anyone else around at the moment.

Hours and Closer are smooth and personal, her pure voice swooping and diving over electronic beeps, thumps, crackles and little throwaway snatches of melody that could all turn into songs in their own right. Preface is a superb opener, fragile harmonies building to a mesmeric march. Then Lights On - 'When I trust you, we can do it with the lights on' - impossible to keep still to. And Video Girl, a masterclass in how to turn a pop song into something very very special.

And then there's the final track, Kicks, which is just so intimate. 'When I'm alone, I don't need you. I love my touch...'

I bought two other cds the day I got this. Sadly, neither St Vincent nor Tuneyards have had much of a look in. Just cannot stop playing Lp1.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy it! Give it a listen! 22 Sep 2014

This is a great album. One of the best this year. I heard snippets on soundcloud and thought I would give it a go. It is up there with the SOHN album earlier in the year. I don't think there is a dud track on the album!

4.0 out of 5 stars LP1- FKA twigs 15 Oct 2014
Format:MP3 Download|Verified Purchase
Overall, this is quite a mesmerising, but rather dark journey through someone else's psyche and artistic experimentation. Far from being in the 'R&B' genre, which I presume it has been allocated to because of FKA twigs' ethnicity, I found many references to Kate Bush in her music, particularly in the single 'Two Weeks'. Although I love this single, it is extremely adult in its theme and language. Some songs on the LP are much better than others and the true vocal range of the singer is not always apparent, however I really find it intriguing and keep discovering new layers in the music. It will not be to everyone's taste and is definitely not a party album!
