Format: Paperback
There are many books that claim they can be life-changing for the reader; there are far fewer that are. This falls into the latter category, IF you are prepared to put in the work. Each chapter ends with "Stem Sentences" for you to complete an contemplate. For example, the first such sentence at the end of the first chapter reads: "Lightbearers in my life include..." and you are invited to name all those who have bought Light into your life.

One of my favourite quotes from the beginning of the book reads:

"You know, you don't have to be so concerned about understanding whether something is or is not so. All you really need to know is whether it works and if it does, how to work it. In fact, 'what is' and 'what works' are really much better definitions of Truth than so called factual accuracy." I found that well worth pondering.

Just a note - the authors are keen to make a difference between spirituality, which this book is about, and religion, which it most certainly is not, at least not in the religion as an institution sense of the words.

Get it, read it, do the exercise and I'm sure you'll come to appreciate it as much as I have.

A Review for the Skeptics (Like Me) 28 Sept. 2012
By Bob Lee - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
I'm writing this review for all the folks out there who tend to be skeptical about books like this. You know who you are: have the link to Skeptics Dictionary bookmarked, turn your head as you walk past a new age bookstore so that nobody will see you looking in. When my friend K recommended Loyalty to Your Soul to me, I approached the book with much the same attitude. And when I started reading it, sure enough my radar picked up two indicators of cultiness right in the first chapter. I quickly fired off an email to my friend saying that she better watch out. (A sure sign that you need this book is if you're too eager to make other people wrong.)

She was hurt by my response. Not because I didn't agree with her point of view, but because she could see just how badly I needed to read the stuff AFTER CHAPTER ONE. Because she was so certain that this book would help me, I decided that I needed to give it another try. I've now not only read the whole book, but have worked through all the exercises. K was right about everything. Loyalty to Your Soul gave me a strategy for dealing with all the little things in my life that seemed to keep me angry more often than I thought they should. Haven't you ever found yourself angry about something and later wondered why something so small could get to you? Maybe you wondered why sometimes the same trigger has a different emotional response? I was caught up in a world where it seemed perfectly sensible to say to someone, "when you do X, it makes me feel (insert negative emotion here)." The reality is that I needed a strategy for identify my own issues that were in fact amplifying the effects of X.

Until I started working through the exercises, I didn't realize how many seemingly innocuous events triggered judgements on my part. And as I delved deeper, I realized that each judgement had a tidy little bundle of self-doubt or negative feelings about myself. My getting angry at a celebrity who got famous despite having no apparent talent was really about my own feelings of not getting enough attention and having to work harder to get noticed. And once I saw that, I could actually let go of those judgmental feelings and not get annoyed when I see that celeb on a magazine cover. This book teaches you how to work through your negative emotions and move on.

The exercises in the book are very simple and not culty, nor new-agey. If you do the work as I have, you will see benefits. Since reading the book last August I've let a lot of old stuff go. But more importantly, I healed enough emotionally to realize that I had some serious issues from my childhood that I needed to deal with via a professional therapist. I now have an awesome doctor and my life is getting is better every day because I stopped pretending that I knew everything that was affecting me, and I actually started working on it. I've also given advice from this book to my own sister. I think that says something about how confident I am about this material.

Now some folks might get turned off by the fact that this book mentions God. Well, the authors don't insist upon any interpretation of God, so you can bring your own. And if you're like me and have trouble with the notion of the all-seeing, all-knowing Being, then do what the folks in 12-step programs do and substitute a "higher power." In my case, "God" refers to the notion that there is love in every person. And if you choose to live your life speaking and acting from that loving authentic self, and if you look for that loving self in others, then you have a supreme force indeed.

So if you're one of the skeptics out there, you have a couple of choices:
* You can continue on with your ego and keep surfing the steady stream of events and images that only serve to piss you off
* You can start owning your responses to the world and use your judgment skills to help yourself.

In conclusion, I'm not a student of USM, nor affiliated with the authors, nor their organization. You don't need to join anything to get some real benefit from Loyalty to Your Soul. I hope this book will help you, and that you too will soon realize that all the love in the world that you ever needed is right there inside you. That's what this book gave me.

A guide to living free - what a Masterpiece. 9 Feb. 2011
By Matthew D. Hertert - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
While I found some of the early structure different from what I am used to reading - the first few chapters were more autobiographical and less "instructional" than I expected - this book was a true gift. There is so much richness in the life events of the authors and the basic principles and skills that are presented, not to mention in what they have clearly crafted in their 30-odd years developing a University curriculum. Coming from such an 'experiential' context as an educational institution is, the authors did a tremendous job transmitting that curriculum and I am buying copies for loved ones, at least the loved ones who want more freedom in their hearts, thoughts and lives. Bravo!

A life changing experience... 30 Jan. 2011
By Bear Weil - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
Ron and Mary Hulnick have presented us with a straight forward, readable, understandable, relevant, pragmatic approach to realizing our own spiritual growth. They present us with very simple and powerful tools to teach us how to facilitate our own spiritual awareness. In addition, learning these processes has the inevitable consequence of participation in the upliftment of humanity. Through this book Ron and Mary use their experiences as the founding faculty and facilitators of the University of Santa Monica to make the principals and practices of Spiritual Psychology available to the world. I loved the book, and having read it, it is my intention to read it again in service to using the principles to take it to even deeper levels.

This book is a roadmap to freedom and spiritual liberation 7 Aug. 2011
By Mike Brown author - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
Ron & Mary Hulnick were my teachers at the University of Santa Monica for spiritual psychology. And this book is an awesome extension of what they teach there.

One of the most powerful things that you will get out of this book is self-forgiveness. Self-forgiveness is really the key to freedom. And the tools that Ron & Mary provide are the most simple, straight forward, and easy to implement that I've every experienced.

I strongly recommend this book and also attending the University of Santa Monica as well. Thank you Ron & Mary for all the blessings and miracles you have given me and the thousands of people you have touched :)

an opportunity for growth 27 Feb. 2011
By Jerrold K - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
20 years after graduating from USM with a masters degree in spiritual psychology the tools given to me continue to make life a place for learning and growing. Drs Ron and Mary Hulnick's teachings provided the foundation for changing my life in profound ways. In this book they have delivered an understandable, sensible and practical view of spiritual psychology as well as the tools to use to deepen one's connection to what spiritual psychology calls the true self. "Loyalty to the Soul" is a clear, concise refresher course of the authors' profound work in their field. Seeing the book from the perspective of an appreciative graduate of USM it is at once a penetrating introduction to spiritual psychology for those willing to take a leap of faith to heal ourselves and a refresher course for those having begun the trip to higher self. I recommend it to anyone who wants to find a path to a happier and more productive way of being on this planet.
