The Orange Order remains the largest organisation in Northern Irish civil society, with a membership exceeding the combined total of all the political parties in the region. This book provides the first ever comprehensive membership survey of the Orange Order. The book draws upon a detailed study of the Orange Order and on a wealth of individual interviews with Orange leaders and its grassroots base. It begins with a historical outline of the Order's development, before turning to a detailed assessment of its contemporary struggle for relevance amid political marginalisation, secularism and diminished benefits to its membership. The book charts the views of members on how to adapt to external changes; explores the sense of belonging provided by membership; analyses the repositories of loyalty that fuel their sense of Britishness and assesses how the century old relationship with the Ulster Unionist Party was replaced by a shift in allegiances. The book discusses the calls for Unionist unity made by the leadership and analyses the membership's desire for a broad Unionist front.
About the Author
Professor James McAuley has written extensively in the area of political sociology and Northern Irish Politics. Professor Jon Tonge has published a vast range of books and articles on Northern Irish Politics, as well as on terrorism and political violence. Dr Andrew Mycock is Senior Lecturer in Politics at the University of Huddersfield.

You read this book Cormac? It doesn't describe the Orange Order as a 'murderous' organisation whatsoever. It is based on a survey of their members and reports on those findings with positive and negative interpretations

This is a disturbing book, but only to those unfamiliar with the sectarian gangsters known as the Orange Order.
I would totally agree with Professor Tonge that his findings are indeed disturbing. But as most nationalist will tell you, they are not surprised at the sectarian mind-set of this totally sectarian and murderous organisation. Isn't it time the Orange dis-Order was banned and their `leaders' jailed for whipping up sectarianism, just like the BNP's support of racism and Nazism? Where are all these so-called liberal-minder people when it comes to nationalists in the North of Ireland? Their silence and hypocrisy is deafening. Read this book and be puzzled as to how a sectarian organisation like this has been permitted and encouraged by the British Government to whip up sectarian hatred. No other country would allow it.
