Product Description

Product Description

Arrested for the first time for selling MDMA to an undercover police officer but by no means a career criminal, Simon Eddisbury was about to experience the prison system from the inside. He had only been dabbling in crime to pay off a student loan but he soon realised that he was going to go down. Eddisbury resolved to make the best of his punishment. He would spend his time finding out what motivates the mind of the contemporary criminal. It would be something to focus on to help him get through the months which stretched out in front of him. With no idea of what to expect or who he would meet, he knew he had no option. Alone and terrified in prison, he nevertheless steeled himself to speak to more than 50 of his fellow offenders - from drug dealers to armed robbers. Some had killed, many would not have thought twice about doing so. Eddisbury's investigation was going to take him into a dark and seedy world inhabited by people intent on taking what doesn't belong to them by whatever means necessary. His interviews give voice to those whose views are rarely heard. Criminals are often portrayed as Robin Hood type characters - lovable rogues who take from society as a whole in order to give back to their deprived communities. But a far more disturbing picture began to emerge. Some inmates are good people driven to crime through difficult circumstances but a shockingly high number are completely amoral and lead very dark lives indeed.

Eddisbury has really dug deep into the lives of the other prisoners that he has encountered. Most prison books focus upon the prisoners' experience in prison itself but he has really interrogated the other prisoners about their lives and the crimes they have committed. This is the last book that genuinely shocked me- some of the people that he talked to really do seem to be evil people. He provides every last detail of their crimes down to their earnings per week and the places that they targeted. I found the chapter about the armed robber from Hull particularly interesting- I've always wondered where people get hold of firearms in places like that. You hear about post office robberies in the news and you think how did they know how to get a gun?? Not only does he explain this question but he even lists the prices of various different types of weapons. I'd recommend this to anyone with an interest in prison or crime. The parts about the prison are at times quite gruelling reading with a lot of self-harm and smuggling in body cavities but its generally a very informative and enlightening book.

Eye-opener 28 Sep 2010

Wow, what a book, not the usual type of book I read, but had me riveted from start to finish. The writer has obviously really interrogated the subjects of this book and has the knack of finding out every intricate and interesting detail of their lives. Quite a dark book, which doesn't hold any punches, painting a picture of British prisons the government wouldn't want anyone to see. Filled with really memorable characters (the effeminate openly gay Jamaican crack dealer, the eccentric bird-loving armed robber and the Buddhist gun salesman to name a few), and I would definitely recommend this.
