I have to say this album and "Here's to Life" are two of my most favourite records by Shirley Horn. The selection of songs here are all about romance, heartaches, longing and solace. Her voice is a pure escapism. She just doesn't sing notes...she sings feelings. She was also a great storyteller. She treats the songs like stories and her voice caresses your ears when she sings. She was the best singer of art songs. Her tempos are slow - the main focus here is her voice. The musical arrangments are bare, minimal like wall paper (it stays at the back without distracting her singing style or the poetic words in the lyrics) and it has late night ambience. Every single track is crisp and immaculate. The tracks read like a great love story. I absolutely adore her rendition of "Someone to light up my life" - you can't get any more sublime than that. The song by the Bergmans, "The Island" - she sang it as a sexy song - as if the song is about making love. Her voice is orgasmic when she sing the phrase "Make it last forever. We're getting close, almost there". This album is one of the most romantic albums I've ever come across. It's stylish, sophisiticated and no wonder why the famous composer, Johnny Mandel commented, "She's the best!" after hearing her voice. I'm so glad that I got this CD and I listen to this in the evening all the time.
