Elvis Sings the Great British Songbook

Biography

Elvis Aaron Presley is one of the biggest-selling artists of all-time, but mere numbers cannot begin to explain the colossal cultural impact he had in the mid-20th Century. He was a central figure in the transformation of the grey, conservative 50s into the technicolor 60s through the liberalizing effect of rock and pop music. Frank Sinatra had proved extremely popular in the 40s with young ... Read more in Amazon's Elvis Presley Store

Format: Audio CD
Not everybody will be lining up to pay for the second “Loving You” release in a year’s time. Yet, unlike the 20-tracks BMG release of 2005, this new double-disc set presented by the Follow That Dream collector's label has 32 + 48 tracks, or a total running time of 136 mins.
The new release also boasts the same top drawer audio restoration (courtesy of Kevan Budd), "the new bonus masters" including sterling cuts like "All Shook Up", "One Night" (2 versions), "That’s When Your Heartaches Begin" and "I Beg of You", and on top of that offers some newly discovered outtakes – of which an almost improvised "Loving You" take and a fantastic "Mean Woman Blues" stand out. Disc 2 has the advantage of offering the complete recording session of the title song (12 takes of the ‘farm version’, 21 of the ‘main version’, plus 15 of the same ‘main version’ in binaural). In the past decade numerous takes of "Loving You" have been dispersed over a multitude of CD's, all sounding different. Here you can browse through them on the same disc, including studio banter and bringing you closer than ever to the creative process. The outtakes that were released earlier do sound like anew: "Blueberry Hill" and "Got A Lot’ O’ Livin’ To Do" taken from acetate source.
The booklet with original cover art has some great pictures and memorabilia, although the designer should be shot for using white fonts on a pale blue background, while the essential info about the recording sessions that produced the "Loving You" album remains rather messy.
So, in the end, collectors won’t want to live without this new release, as it presents the complete album in the best possible sound so far and adds a truly delectable collection of extras equally in much improved sound quality.

One good thing about the decline of RCA as the record label of choice is we now see people making money from Elvis with intelligence. In 1957 you could put out Elvis reading the shopping list and it would have sold - RCA realised this and released material with no imagination or flair. Now we have the ability to present material better in terms of hearing it more as it was and in context. So whilst repeated stabs at "Loving you" (never one of my favourite songs too blatantly a niche) may be eyebrow raising when reading the sleeve notes it is fantastic to listen to: it is like being there when it all happened! Clearly record companies realise this is what some of us want, and the digital technology means if it is too much there is always a "random button" for us. Excellent release and well worth adding to the collection

I waited many years to obtain a copy of the fast take of Loving You that I had first heard over the main titles at the cinema. Now I have them all 60 takes all in pristine condition. Add in a plethora of superb tracks from 57 (was Elvis ever in better form vocally?; perhaps he was in 58??) and you simply MUST buy this cd. Use your random button though to break up the sequence as a whole 60 takes of Loving You is rather a lot even for me!
