Amazon Review

Although modern women are able to maintain a successful independent life , many still psychologically succumb to the old-fashioned societal expectation that their overriding role is to be a loving subservient mate to their man. By reading Loving Him Without Losing You, "women will come to understand that the tendency to lose themselves in relationships is partly a natural by-product of their cultural conditioning and biological hardwiring".

Beverly Engel, psychotherapist and author of numerous self-help books for women (such as Raising Your Sexual Self-Esteem), sets about explaining the phenomenon of the "Disappearing Woman". A woman who, in spite of being strong, secure and self-assured, forfeits her own personality and ignores her own needs whenever she enters into a romantic relationship.

Do you tend to fall head over heels in love quickly and intensely? Do you neglect friendships to be with your lover? Do you tend to undervalue and question your own feelings whenever they differ from your lover's? Do you need constant reassurance of your lover's feelings toward you? According to Engel, these are just some of the symptoms of "Disappearing Woman" syndrome.

Loving Him Without Losing You offers empathy and insight coupled with exercises and cures. By including excerpts of interviews with 47 subjects, the author illustrates the biological and sociological factors that cause women to become "emotional chameleons" and offers advice to those stuck in similar behavioural ruts. Empowering and encouraging, Losing Him Without Losing You is a must for all women who immerse themselves in their men. --Christopher Kelly --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

This book clearly explains why so many women find themselves in fantasy marriages and romances with real men. In an age when women are supposed to be strong, independent, and liberated, it is embarrassing to admit that when it comes to relationships with men we still tend to behave in ways that are far too reminiscent of our mothers and grandmothers. Read the first page

5.0 out of 5 stars In depth journey 14 May 2003

Format:Paperback
This book has helped me to understand why I did what I did and gives very good examples on how to work on the painful problem. It pointed me in the right direction and I repeat reading the book. I'm seeing the process as a kind of recovery and am glad to have bought this book. I'm a single and might be for a while until I feel that I'll successfully cope without "giving up everything" to be with a man. Those of you who've found out that they've done this before will know how painful it can be and how painful it might end... do yourself a favour and heal. Good luck.

This is the best self-help book I have ever read and believe me, I have read many!
I have known for years I have a problem in relationships with men, but despite years of soul-searching and many therapies, could never find the answer(s).
Beverly Engel has the key. Not only does she describe the problems most women have in relationships, but she acknowledges and describes these problems and actually comes up with strategies to overcome these and become yourself. She hands back the reins of control in her simple 7 stage strategies.
Easy to read, easy to follow and very empowering.
A real must for any woman who finds she disappears in relationships.
