Product Description

Hello may I speak to Barbara. Barbara this is Shirley, is the opening line from one of the all time great Soul tracks about a love triangle. It was a massive hit for Shirley Brown in 1974 selling a million copies in eight weeks by December of that year. Bettye Crutcher and Lester Snell wrote an answer song From His Woman to you for Lady Love Barbara Mason. Barbara retained the Southern Soul part monologue/part sung sound for the follow up single Shackin Up. These tracks marked a change of direction for Barbara whose previous albums had been recorded in Philadelphia. Loves the Thing was recorded at United Sound Studios in Detroit in 1975. It would be the forth and last album she recorded for Buddah and also the last with her then Husband, Manager and Producer Jimmy Bishop. Unusually Barbara only wrote 3 of the songs on this album, one of them He Wants The Two Of Us a co-write with Bettye Crutcher. Four of the songs were written by the song writing team of Jerry Aikens, Reginald Turner and Victor Drayton from the Formations group along with Johnny Bellmon. The strongest of these is the Detroit dancer One Man Between Us, a track that sounds right for todays Modern soul scene. Loves The Thing was more successful than Transition reaching no 42 in the R&B album charts, a feat that none of her subsequent albums for a variety of labels ever achieved.

Well it's certainly my favourite Soul album and is in my top 5 albums in all of the music genres that I listen to.

I don't know why it has taken Soul Brother Records so long to release this when they released Lady Love and Give Me Your Love earlier as, in my opinion, it is much stronger than any of Barbara's other Buddha LPs. Perhaps the earlier albums have broader appeal because they contain better known songs or possibly because they were originally earlier releases. Anyway, as this was unavailable until recently I ended up buying an expensive Japanese release in order have it on CD.

All of the songs are great and some of the ballads are absolutely stunning. Some of the notes that she hits are a bit cracked/wobbly but I think that only adds to the feeling of emotion rather than being a problem. Barbara replies to Shirley Brown's Woman To Woman on the song From His Woman To You and there are lots of other songs that deal with relationships, love triangles and cheating. I think that this is the most consistent album that Barbara Mason ever made and plays like a suite of connected songs that make listening to it in one go a complete pleasure. This is a great album that is well worth the money.

Thank you Soul Brother Records. Now if I can only get a copy of Shirley Brown's Intimate Storm where she once again responds to Barbara claim over her man on UK CD I'll be very happy. I'll also be ordering Transition as well as this is another excellent Barbara Mason album

A rescued classic 9 Jun 2014

A true ghetto soul classic, done at a time when cheating records were all the rage on the soul charts. Love's the Thing cashes in on the trend pretty heavily with seven of its ten songs fearuring infidelity as the subject, catering to the new morality. The biggest hit on offer is Mason's answer to Shirley Brown's monumental classic "Woman to Woman"; her "From His Woman to You" really amped the dialogue at the time and kept listeners listening. Subsequently "From His Woman" was a big hit for Barbara, and set up the album very nicely. On the whole Love's the Thing is a curious blend of southern and Philly soul styles which are balanced out nicely by Barbara's commitment to the materia and the excellent production overall. Of her 4 Buddah albums this is my favorite and still sounds fresh 40 + years later!
