Book Description

CHERYL HOLT dazzles readers once again with another tale of soaring romance and breathtaking drama as she delivers the second novel in her critically-acclaimed ‘Lord Trent’ trilogy.

Helen Stewart never understood why—as a tiny girl—she and her twin sister Harriet were sent away to boarding school and never allowed home for holidays. At age sixteen, they were shocked to discover that they are the illegitimate daughters of the notorious rogue, Charles Sinclair. Cast out by their relatives, they moved to London, and Helen has made a life for herself as a lady’s companion. In her line of employment, she must maintain a stellar reputation, but she’s exhausted by the fussy whims of the debutantes she’s forced to chaperone. She’d give anything to change her fate.

James Harcourt, Earl of Westwood, is in a bind. After his father died, he learned that his estates were bankrupt. He gambles to replenish his coffers so he’s living a dissolute bachelor’s life. When his female ward arrives unexpectedly for an extended visit, he must protect her from scandal by hiring a lady’s companion. When pretty, alluring Helen interviews for the position, he’s instantly smitten. She possesses the qualifications to fill a much more intimate role.

He shocks her by suggesting she become his mistress, and when his offer is rebuffed, he begins a cunning seduction, aimed at wearing her down. Helen can’t resist the temptation he offers, but she doesn’t have the sophistication to survive in his world. And as James immerses them in a dangerous spiral of pleasure and excitement, he proves that he is determined to have her at any cost…

The story was utterly far fetched but I could have easily forgiven that and enjoyed the story if it weren't for the constant use of modern American slang. If you're setting a story in 19th century London then please don't use words like fired, severance, cute, smart etc.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Very Enjoyable Read. 2 July 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is the second book in the Lord Trent series. As with the first book in the series, Love's Promise, I very much enjoyed it. Again a well written romance with interesting story lines that keep you involved right through to the satisfying ending. Although this is a series, and some characters from the first book are referred to, this can be read as a stand-alone book. I have just bought the third book in the series, Love's Peril, which I have been really looking forward to.

1.0 out of 5 stars The worst historical romance ever 23 Sept. 2013
By S Blake
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Possibly this was the author's first book, in which case I could maybe say it was understandable, but the vocabulary was certainly not written relating to the nineteenth century - more present century. I doubt any research was done on this book, and unfortunately I could only manage reading 25% of the book it was so bad. Having read numerous historical novels, this has to be the worst - most unbelievable plot and diabolically written.

2.0 out of 5 stars Pretty grim 12 July 2013
By Cas
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is a very strange novel. Although the reader is constantly told that this is nineteenth century England, it feels more like early twentieth century America. A few Americanisms in a Regency novel can be forgiven, but they're on every page, adding to the reader's sense of dislocation. Then there's the matter of the utterly unbelievable thing that appears in the Bay of Biscay - not the event itself, but that flag.

The characters are unattractive and unappealing. There is nothing remotely likeable about the two male protagonists, who both behave disgracefully towards the women. The women themselves are unladylike - their language would make a sailor blush. They stomp everywhere, which made me picture them as small and dumpy and constantly bad-tempered. Perhaps it means something else in the US.

*SPOILERS* There is no chemistry between James and Helen and I was more surprised by their first kiss than she was. All the characters are disturbingly gullible and utterly unable to reflect on events and characters so that they can draw their own conclusions rather than relying on things told to them by people they know are unreliable.

There is the germ of a good story here and another polish of the draft would probably have brought it out.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good 1 July 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I read the first book and this one is just as good, the previous characters re-enter the story so there's continuity, not sure that real life is so exhaustingly exciting but it's nice to escape through an interesting book
