Product Description

The legendary Jerry Butler (nicknamed The Ice Man for both his cool vocal style and his personal demeanour) was already well established as a successful recording artist in 1975 when he was approached by then-Motown president Ewart Abner, with whom he d worked at the start of his recording career at Vee-Jay Records, to sign with the globallyrenowned record company. Chicago-based Jerry began immediately working on LOVE S ON THE MENU with some of Motown s in-house producers (including Hal Davis, Michael Sutton and Michael Smith), The album featured mostly original compositions (a number cowritten by Butler) alongside covers of the Syreeta/Stevie Wonder song, I m Goin Left, Olivia Newton-John s I Honestly Love You, the Lionel Richie-penned, Commodores-recorded standout This Is Your Life and the single, The Devil In Mrs. Jones Released in 1977, Jerry s second Motown set SUITE FOR A SINGLE GIRL (which he co-produced with Homer Talbert and Paul Wilson) and was, as its title implied, a concept-driven album. Recorded in Chicago, the nine tracks were written by members of Jerry s famed Music Workshop; standouts included the US R&B charted single I Wanna Do It To You, Only Pretty Girls and the almost-eight minute long opus, Music In Her Dreams/Dream Music.

These two albums make a great value CD. The singing, the backing vocals, arrangements and production are great, although disco creeps in here and there. The only thing lacking is tunes. In his excellent autobiography Bobby Womack tells of Sam Cooke dragging him out of Jerry's dressing room in case he copped a few melodies from Bobby's guitar jams and vocal musing, Sam had spotted Jerry's weakness.

I am glad to have this from a completist's point of view, but I ache for Jerry's earlier Mercury CDs to appear on CD. Anyone starting out on Jerry might look at the bargain priced CDs of VJ cuts, which include some fabulous duets with an uncredited Curtis Mayfield and the lovely Betty Everett, but for Jerry at his most majestic the Ice Man / Ice on Ice 2 on 1 CD,or the Mercury years double, where he teamed up with Gamble and Huff to produce the most wistful soul ever are surely the ones to have.

Like Caston and the Majors another product that Motown did not push enough. I had only heard a few tracks from this and when I received it (fast delivery from Amazon) I listened to it and I think all the tracks are good I was pleasantly surprised by I honestly love you it seems like a different song to the olivia newton john version. To me both albums are great to listen to and as a Jerry Butler fan and a Motown fan I would thoroughly recommend this.

"Love's on the Menu", excellent! Not crazy about "Suite for the Single Girl". I have the original "Love on the Menu" on LP and also on CD. Disappointed with Single for the Single Girl, material isn't great like the ice man, himself.

I was looking for Suite For the Single Girl" by Jerry Butler. It was a favorite album for me in my late-teens early-twenties. I was excited to find it and that it included his "Love's On the Menu". Any Jerry Butler fan will appreciate this product.

Great mellow, funky and disco soul collection!!! 3 April 2013
By Eddie Landsberg - Published on Amazon.com
This is a two for one authorized Motown reissue. Frankly speaking LOVE'S ON THE MENU is the better one... a straight through listen -- with the FUNKY, FUNKY, FUNKY THE DEVIL IN MIRS. JONES, I'M GOING LEFT and THANK YOU EARLY BIRD stealing the show.

Jerry Butler, was a one of a handful of artists to emerge from THE IMPRESSIONS and go out on their own. Curtis Mayfield, was obviously the star, and Leroy Hudson, the underrated star. --Jerry Butler; however, could hold his ground as a singer, whether or not he had the vocal power or agility (or hits) of say a Joe Simon, Billy Paul or Willie Hutch -- (Let's not even try comparing him to Bobby Womack!)

A weak point of the album, is that like many MOTOWN productions, there's more pristineneness than edge... the style is similar to the Philly International Sound... definitely not as edgy as Curtom, and definitely not raw edge like Stax... still, the album definitely has a a heavy Disco Soul thang going and its high points are high points.

SUITE FOR THE SINGLE GIRL is way too lay back for my tastes most the way through... which isn't to say that its not listenable... just at times *yawn* -- predictable.
Chalk It Up and You Gotta Believe In Me among some of the albums higher points.

The CD comes with a nice 15 page booklet (great read while listening) --
=and definitely belongs in any serious soul collector and fan of mid-70s disco soul collector's collection.

GET IT!!!
