However, Lovers Speak is a solid enough collection for the true fan and would serve the novice listener well as an introduction to her more current output. The numerous standouts include the guitar and percussion-driven title track and "Let's Talk About Us", the heartrending "Less Happy More Often", the beautiful and intimate "Crazy for You" and the introspective "Blessed". "In These Times" is a solemn piano ballad, surprisingly written before the events of 9/11, that makes you want to call your best friend. --Lorry Fleming

Another gem for this classic recording artist....,

I've been listening to this collection since it came out herein the states and its grown on me and I think its right up there with many of her other 5 stars collections she's effortlessly put out since the 70's. Joan is different and she stands out but has really never had the radio backing so you have to go see her live to really appreciate this womans body of work and her musical arrangements and vocals are rare these days. She is a classic artist. So many highlights on Lovers Speak. My favorites are Prove yourself, Love bug, Tender trap, Lovers speak, Fire and Ice, Crazy for you just to name so many. Looking forward to seeing her in Boston next month!! Its been 8 years since her last but this cd proves itself when you take the time to listen to it on a regular basis.

Patchy but some great moments,

It's always hard to review a new album from the great Joan, since they take a while to grow - I was initially disappointed by the last album (What's Inside) but have come to really love it. On first listening there are three classics here - Lovers Speak, Tender Trap, and Love Bug, with The Ocean starting to grow on me too. I don't think the rest is as good as she can be, so unless you've got all the others (Walk Under Ladders? To The Limit? Back to the Night? These are the best three) it may not be worth getting this one. Sorry Joan! But we still love you!

Among her best....,

I've never been a hardcore Joan fan -- liked a few of her songs over the years but always found her albums a bit patchy, especially recently. My partner is a fan, however, and we've been to see Joan live, where she is at her formidable best. After relative silence from her on the recording front, I heard that she was putting this one out independently and didn't hold out much hope for it, but I really do think it's brilliant, and that some of the tracks on here rate among her best. My only cavil is "Love Bug", which has a strange 80s vibe about it, and the unnecessary radio edit of "Lovers Speak" which ruins the flow of the album. Otherwise, top marks for turning out great music after all this time.
