Many books are advertised as being funny but few live up to the hype . . . The Lovers of Pound Hill is genuinely witty and very, very clever . . . satire at its best.

I read the review for this book in the Current Archaeology magazine! It appeared to be an archaeological investigation of a chalk hill figure, a gnome with an enormous appendage. The author had a "Victoria Wood" way of telling the story through the characters of the villagers, who lived below the "gnome" on the hill. The story begins with a trendy, young female archaeologist arriving to complete her Grandfathers work. I chuckled and giggled all through this book, and enjoyed the archaeologly too,it's got romance, humour and a lovely ending.

Good story but far too long winded. Not up to the standard of her first novels which were zippy, funny & tight knit.

I've read most of Mavis Cheek's books and enjoyed most of them. Here previous book Truth to tell was typical of her style: a witty take on relationships between men and women. The Lovers of Pound Hill is quite different in style: more like a farce with caricatures instead of people that one can identify with let alone sympathize with. There are also so many characters that I kept having to remind myself who these two-dimensional people were. The narrative is all over the place flitting from person to person and the humour seems laboured rather than Mavis Cheek's usual sparkling wit.

Only after about 70 pages of introducing the multitude of characters does the story start to get going and a very slow story it is. The book is much longer than is usual for the author and I found it a long slog to finish it.
The gist of the story is that there is a large figure cut into Pound Hill rather like the Cern Abbey Giant (much is made of the figures potent fertility symbol) and the grand-daughter of an archeologist who first excavated the site comes back to do further work. See gets involved with all the different couples/lovers/would-be lovers in the adjoining village. She makes a certain discovery and all well that ends well. That's about it. I was disappointed by the book.
